Hello Mike:

I need to verify some info or at least get some info. on several of Barry Bonds earlier ordered bats. I am looking at 1985-1986 for all records of LS P72 bats for Bonds. I have a seller claiming to have one of the very first orders of bats that Barry ever placed back in 1985 for six LS P72 bats. Can you verify all of Barry's bat orders in 1985 - 1986 years for all models?

Secondly, Can you get me order info. for years 86-89 specifically for LS S-329 models for bonds?

Third, can you get me Bonds orders for 91-92 for LS H238 bats as well?

If he did not order the models in the years I have listed could you list any similar years that orders for these models were placed. I appreciate all of your help with this.

Thanks
Brett Herman

Mike: Just to clarify I only need records for 1985-86 for any Barry Bonds LS P-72 bats ordered unless anything was ordered by Barry prior to that period.

Thanks
Brett

Hi Brett--

Timely question as I recently authenticated three Bonds bats and the lengthy records are well-annotated. Here goes --

First- Bonds' earliest documented order of H & B bats was on 7/10/85 while at Prince William for six P72 bats at 34.5 inches / 32 ounces with a Walker Finish (light handle w/ dark barrel). In 1986 he only ordered Model P72 bats -- ten at 33.5 inches / 31 ounces and and sixty at 34.5 inches / 32 or 32.5 ounces. All had Walker Finish except for six that did not have the finish recorded, so likely they were Natural Finish.

Second -- Between 3/17/87 and 7/31/87 Bonds had six separate orders of Model S329 bats totaling sisty-seven bats. All were 34 inches / 32 ounces. Finishes were Natural Finish and Flame Treated Finish. All had rounded ends (or at least were not documented as cupped ends.) On 2/24/88 Bonds was shipped his final order of Model S329 bats-- eleven bats, 34 inches / 32 ounces / Flame Treated Finish with cupped ends (S329). No other orders of Model S329 or S329C bats are documented in Bonds records through 8/13/97.

Third-- From 3/3/88 through 8/13/97, from Louisville Slugger, Bonds ONLY ORDERED Model H238 and H238C bats. Lengths can be found of 33 inches (1997), 33.5 ounces (1988 and 1997) and 34 inches (all years). All weights were 31 or 32 ounces, with the exception of a few at 40 ounces during several Spring Trainings. Finishes were Flame Treated (99.5%), and Wax. One order of bats in 1989 is documented as M238 with a Walker Finish, but I believe that may be a data entry error, and the bats were actually H238 as it is the only non-H238 order over that entire 10-year period.

As bonds' popularity (?) grew over the years, more and more bats were sent to Baseball Miscellaneous, Baseball Promotions, and various marketing and promotions companies, and ost were Model H238 bats in the lengths actually ordered by Bonds.Early Bonds models that should command a premium include P72, C235, and S329. A single order of R43 bats 34 inches / 34 ounces was sent to Baseball Miscellaneous in Feb. 1988.

Good luck.

Mike, thanks for the info. Do you have the order dates or ship dates for the 1986 P-72's and were they all shipped to Pittsburgh? According to my research, Barry did not appear in his first game until May of 1986, I am wondering if he was in the minors for a month or just warming the pine at the big league level? I am also wondering when those 86 bats were ordered and if he took the 6 or any number of the 6 P72 1985 order with him to Pittsburg. Thanks again for all of your help.
