Brian I have a all black P72 M9 of Ian Stewart. It was MLB authenticated as being used & broken on 8-29-09.The bat has his old number 24 and a an oval stamped into the knob with the lettering I believe to be TECO although it is somewhat obsecured by pine tar. The bat is obviously an 2008.The handle also has the surface scratched 12" from the knob to check for the slope of the grain. My question is. Is TECO hired by MLB to check older maple bats say from 08 so that they could be used in 2009 if they pass muster??Any reply from you or other forum members would be appreciated.

Yes, TECO and their minions are the ones grading bats for use in the MLB. You are correct the bat in question was graded by TECO and allowed to be used this year.
TECO also does quarterly inspections of the manufacturers. I will be seeing them Oct. 8-9.Brian HillerichComment
