Yankees wear 34 on back of hat?

When (if ever did the yankees wear the number 34 on the back of their hats? If anyone knows anything about this... it would be a great help... thanks in advance....

Wow I have never seen that before and by the looks of it, it is a fairly recent cap. To be honest someone else may be a better cap expert than me on the Yankees but other than 39 I have never seen a cap with 34 on it especially not like that.

If you check my Profile pic it shows 39 on the back of a Yankees cap. It was for Strawberry.

I'm going to guess it was for Mel Stottlemyre pitching coach for the Yanks between 1996-2005 who was diagnosed with blood cancer while he was with them.
