Jeff Clement 2008 Rookie Game Used Bat & Jersey

The photo on the left is from the early May series in NY, as can be shown by the photo on the right from Getty, which is also dated on May 4th. The fans, dugout players and equipment match up to the PhotoFile image as well.

Here are the MLB authentication notes for both the bat and jersey
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g7/EmeraldRain34/Photomatched/ClementBatMLB.jpghttp://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g7/EmeraldRain34/Photomatched/ClementJerseyMLB.jpg

Here is the picture of the bat marks

Here is 2 pictures of the snagged thread on the sleeve of his jersey.
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g7/EmeraldRain34/Photomatched/Jerseys104.jpghttp://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g7/EmeraldRain34/Photomatched/Jerseys106.jpg

And the overall comparison
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g7/EmeraldRain34/Photomatched/JeffClement5.jpg

I feel in my opinion that the marks on the bat match up perfectly, the photo and MLB authentication pinpoint it to the same date. There is certainly the possibility that there is another snag on the sleeve of another Clement jersey but I feel that the odds are slim to none. I feel this is indeed a photomatch but I would like to hear any other thoughts/comments on the match.

My first photomatch.

I bought this jersey from mlb.com auction since I did not have an Astros home pinstripe jersey. I didn't really care whose jersey I got, I just wanted one..so I ended up with Dave Borkowski's.

I saw that he had pitched in a couple of home games this year where he might have worn the shirt..and below are screenshots from a game in July against the Dodgers. The pinstripes match up everywhere.

Although I started this thread long ago, I admit that I have not viewed it for some time. It is amazing to me how some are still stretching/watering down the term photomatch. Rudy is right ... if it's not an undeniable, exact match, then it is not a photomatch. A close similarity is no more a photomatch than a vague likeness. A photo shows an exact and undeniable match or it does not. Photomatching is not horseshoes.

As for the the member who asked about LOAs that identify the game in which the item was used, this has absolutely nothing to do with photomatching. Kyle and Joel debated this a while back at the beginning of this thread (see posts 16 and 17, in particular) and Joel's side of the argument was correct. If you have a photo that shows a style-match and an LOA that specifies the exact game (or inning or quarter or whatever) in which the item was used to go along with your style-match photo, you still only have a style-match. The LOA can not make the style-match a photomatch. In fact, it has no bearing on it whatsoever.

Thanks to Jason for picking up this Mike Hampton bat for me at the Braves Clubhouse Store. This bat was used by Mike Hampton on August 5th, 2008, then on August 6th, Yunel Escobar removed the tape job that Hampton had on the bat and Yunel used this bat also and cracked it in his first at-bat. Hampton went 1-for-2 with this bat with a double and Escobar went 0-for-1. I have this bat photomatched with Hampton so now I'm trying to find a photomatch with Escobar, but it will be hard since this bat only lasted 3 pitches with Yunel.

I have seen some awesome posts here of some beautiful items. It is nice to see some authentic items for a change, instead of looking at all the junk on the market lately.
Here is my one and only "photomatched" jersey which just also happens to be my "holy grail" item. I went through years of search and several fakes before coming across this gem. The matches just seal the deal with a big red bow! It is my 1982 Herschel Walker jersey. It was worn at least twice during his Heisman season. These matches are from two games that year. against Vanderbilt and Memphis State. He set 2 SEC records in this jersey. Most career TD's and most career total points.

I had these photos of Marco Scutaro from the semi final game against Korea saved on my PC, the dirt stains match up and if you look at the number "1", you can see the two ripples or puckering, which is the correct term that also matches up, sweet jersey and a couple of perfect matches!

On the Reyes jersey, if you look closely you can see a thread hanging on the front left sleeve, which matches the left sleeve in the game photo of Reyes with David Wright. If the jersey is MLB dated to that game, I would call it a photo match.

Look at the "Y" in the name it is slightly lower that the other letters, the jersey shows a little evidence of the stains even though they were washed off, there are still a little bit of shadows where the stains used to be, also the "Y" in the NY is exactly the same spot. Jersey came with a Steiner COA & the MLB Hologram # is BB242687:

Hologram number BB242687 was located in the MLB Authentication Database under JERSEYS.

Guys - some very nice photomatched jerseys. I would use caution, though, before including MLB holograms or MLB dating in this discussion. Such things have nothing to do with photomatching. The in-action photo and game used item are either an exact match or they are not. Holograms, provenance, documentation, stories, league dating, etc., have nothing to do with whether an item is photomatched or photomatchable. The only exception for holograms would be in the case that the hologram is shown on the item in the in-action player photo, which would be a highly unusual case since holograms are typically added after game use has been completed (although there is the recent example of LeBron wearing signed/hologram-tagged shoes in a game this season versus the Lakers). Again, some absolutely terrific photomatched items here... thank you for sharing.

Still, they are kick-ass cleats!

I recently acquired a 2002 Pujols game-used bat with a certificate from LaRussa's ARF dated 11/16/02. Included with the COA was the auction sheet that was displayed with the bat at the auction. I was told the photo on the auction sheet showed Pujols breaking the actual bat being auctioned. Here's the auction sheet:

http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w232/birdbats/Bats/ARFAuctionsheet.jpg
I was skeptical, so when the bat arrived, I tried to find the actual photo online. It wasn't a Getty shot, but I eventually found it searching images on Google. The best part was, the image online wasn't cropped and I could see bunting on the wall in the background. That tipped me off that the shot was taken during the post season.

http://redbirdnation.blogspot.com/pujols400x292.jpg
After more research, I learned the Cards played three home games during the post season in 2002. In two of those games (vs. SF in the LCS), Pujols used blue and white batting gloves and was clean shaven. But, in the other game -- game 3 of the DCS vs. Arizona -- everything matched up. Best of all, I found a shot on Getty of the same at-bat as the other photo from a different angle.

http://cache2.asset-cache.net/xc/1974158.jpg?v=1&c=NewsMaker&k=2&d=17A4AD9FDB9CF1939057D9939C83F106A4E7F66CA836E522 E30A760B0D811297

Albert batted four times in that game on 10/5/02... walked twice, singled in the third and flew out in the fifth. Both batted balls went to center field, which is where he's looking in the top photo. I can't narrow this down to the single or the fly out, but I'm feeling good my bat was used for one (or both) of them.

There are a couple other pieces of into worth mentioning. First, Pujols didn't use uncupped ash bats often in 2002, so that really narrowed down the search. And second, Pujols received only 6 uncupped ash C243 bats in 2002 -- on September 13. Given the date of the game in the photos and the date of the auction, the time frame is appropriate.

Other than the pine tar pattern and the location of the crack, there's not much else to go on in terms of a positive photo match. In the top photo, there seems to be quite a bit of writing on the knob, which also would be consistent with my bat. Without a higher-resolution photo, I can't say for sure. However, given the type of bat, the time frame, the provenance, the visual evidence and the odds that another unfinished/uncupped ash LS would break in the same location, I think my bat is the same bat in the photos.

Here is my photomatched 2007-08 Henrik Sedin Set 3 jersey. Notice the large stick mark next to the crest. That happened in the first game this jersey was worn.
I haven't been able to find hi-res photos of games later in this set to match the other wear but this is pretty sweet.

Here are a couple shots of the bat -- note the location of the crack relative to the photos above:

Unfortunately, this thread has been watered down with a bunch of stylematch postings lately. Some do not understand the difference. Others appear to just not care. The difference between a photomatch and stylematch in terms of authentication is staggering.

I actually want an answer on this. sometime it is a little stitch on a letter that is sticking out that is the distinct mark that the person is looking at. Kyle is a great example of a person with a great eye. So I am giving the person a chance to tell me what they are seeing.

Big thanks to Matthew at TriplexXxSports for walking me through the UV light process and for the incredible photo montage.
This jersey has been laundered so the UV process was a necessity in order to help identify it.
The numbers look white to the naked eye but when you hit them with the UV light the hidden remnants of laundered
4-year old stains are revealed.
The UV light also amplifies the appearance of the dings in the mesh body.
Also note the differing distances from the seam on each shoulder that the
Reebok logo was sewn and the way that they match this jersey.

Unfortunately the photos I took from the Red Sox series don't have enough resolution to catch loose stitches. Normally I can catch them but only when the ushers let me go to the first level of the dugout to take pics. For that Yankees and Red Sox series' here in Atlanta it was a mad house and there were no spots for me to sit, so I had to take the pics from far back.

But about the photos, if you have a Flickr account, then add Keith Allison as a contact. He uses the best of the best when it comes to camera & lens and he's at most Balitimore Orioles games. So for any equipment from a team who visited Baltimore, you need to check out his sets. He has each team listed and all his photos under them, and best of all, he puts all his pictures up in full resolution like how you found them (it's hard finding photographers willing to do that)

While they very well may be the item in the pictures, I think people are falling into the "style match" vs "photo match" scenerio (Milledge glove & Knicks jersey)....That Alex Gordon bat is the perfect example of what a photo match is.

There is wear marks in the same places as the pics. It's easier to see because I can literally pick up the glove, and can't really get pictures of all the small spots.

Jason Bartlett 2008 full-season worn belt. The final game this belt was worn was Game 5 of the 2008 World Series. There is a splotch of dirt next to one of the holes which matches on the same exact hole in a close-up of the photo below from Game 5. I'm still trying to find another photo with a better view of the match. Also what's pretty cool about this photo is that you can see exactly how the other dirt came from on the side of the belt, and this photo shows him sliding on his side.

Awesome match. Were did you score that one.

I got my Jack Del Rio helmet in an Ebay auction about 6 years ago from another Vikings collector. It is probably the coolest helmet in my entire Minnesota Vikings helmet collection because of the exact photo match. A couple of years ago, I found the matching game photo of Del Rio wearing the helmet on the Getty Images website, and I almost fell out of my chair with excitement. I paid about $200 to Getty Images to obatain the license right to make a copy of the photo I found showing the photo-match. The red mark on the horn of Del Rio's helmet occurred during the 1993 (actually, January 1994) Vikings playoff game against the New York Giants. Photos I have seen from earlier in that game show that the red mark was not on the helmet in the first half of the game, but then the red mark appeared on Del Rio's helmet later in the second half of the game. So the red mark is clearly from helmet-to-helmet impact with the red stripe of a Giants helmet from that very playoff game.

Well, with some generous help from Bert/Shoremen44 in obtaining stills from the game video, I have now been able to match this 3 Double game bat additionally to a 2 HR game a couple days earlier. I've got perfect photo-matches to both HRs on 9/7/09 and the doubles on 9/9/09 and know from MLB the bat was broken on 9/11/09. In that time span Butler went 3-4, 2-3, 3-5, 2-5, 1-5 (not sure what inning the bat was broken) with a total of 2 HR and 4 Doubles, including double #45 on the season. Anyhow its safe to say this bat was the tool used for a spectacular hot streak. Below is my full sheet, with the HR at bat matches - thanks to Bert.

And just for a little more color, here is the game recap discussion of the first home run... an absolute bomb... http://kansascity.royals.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090907&content_id=6837698&vkey=recap&fext=.jsp&c_id=kc
---
Butler wowed the Labor Day audience of 18,453 with a 442-foot shot. Catching hold of a 2-2 slider from right-hander Ervin Santana, Butler sent the drive soaring high over the left-field bullpen and against the lower glass of the new Royals Hall of Fame.
Heck, he wasn't even trying to do anything like that. His objective is to hit everything to right-center field. With the count 2-2, he just wanted a little line drive or a grounder through a hole.
Home run? Never entered his mind. Butler just got a little ahead of the pitch and pulled it to deepest left field.
"Two-strike approach, I'm not trying to hit that. I'm just trying to put the barrel on the ball and that's what happened," he said.
So it was just an accident?
"Yeah, exactly. I'm just trying to hit a line drive, get something through the infield," Butler said. "At that point, it's a close 2-1 game and I'm just trying to get something going."

Butler even outdid St. Louis slugger Albert Pujols, who on June 21 became the first to reach the Hall of Fame glass with a grand slam. But Pujols' drive was estimated at a mere 423 feet. The stadium record is Bo Jackson's 475-foot blast in 1986 against Seattle's Mike Moore.
Butler also homered in the eighth against reliever Jose Arredondo, a solo drive that was much more modest. It just cleared the left-center-field wall, estimated at 390 feet.
That gave Butler four RBIs. In the sixth, he singled to right field to score Josh Anderson for the Royals' fifth run.

That is the NICEST billy butler bat i have ever seen!!!!

I just picked up these 2 jerseys and have been able to photo match them both.
First one is an Anthony Spencer throwback used last season against the Chiefs and the Raiders. I've matched it to 4 photos from the Raiders game but I think this one is the best. Look at the mark on the 9 of the left sleeve.

Second one is a Miles Austin jersey worn last season in the first game against the Eagles where he had a 49 yd TD catch. I matched this one to 2 pics. I think this is the best though. The grass stain is pretty easy to spot on this one.

Look at the 3 bubbles on the right side of the 4.
Also look at the color difference between the 5 and the 4.
The 5 is much wither and clean and the 4 looks off white.

They played carolina twice at home during the regular season. Has a great autograph which is getting really tough from him.

Trying to photmatch my 2008 Jed Lowrie Red Sox bat...

the blue transfer mark in between "R" Logo and the JED LOWRIE match and the pine tar on hadle match as well as the large dirt mark under his left index finger is in the exact same spot.

But this is my opinion so please let me know what everyone thinks....

Hopefully a second potential photo match.

2008 Russell Branyan Game Used and cracked Old Hickory. According to the MLB coa it was broken July 17, 2008 against Cleveland. Found 2 pics from the game the day before.

Notice the very distinc black piece of pine tar/dirt on the handle in both pictures...as well as same dirt pattern on the knob in the smaller picture.

Again, please let me know what everyone thinks!

I believe that dot is on ink blot, which will be found on many bats (assuming it's maple) so it can't be used for photomatching.

Said it before, Hockey is just so much easier to photo-match. 2006/07 Home Navy Roberto Luongo Vancouver Canucks. It's a MeiGray shirt, so authenticity was never a question but it just feels so good to get not 1 but 2 dead on photo-matches in one picture.

Someone asked about a "true" photo-match. This would be a photographic answer.

I finally photo matched my Ryan Howard game used helmet. I got it back in 2007 at a phillies auction. I photo matched to september 26, 2006 his MVP year. The pics don't show the marks real well but if you blow up the ryan howard pic, you can see the big scuff mark, there both in the same spot. Also once again the pics don't show it real well but in the second pic its has all the black marks in a line, exactly the same as in the pic.

Just got this one directly from the player, Oskars Bartulis, who is a rookie on the Flyers. He played for Latvia during the Olympics and this one is photo matched to their playoff game in the Olympics, where they lost in OT. The blade tape doesn't show a lot of use as it was re-taped late in the game or OT and then barely saw any use after that. Oskars signed it nice and big on the blade, but signed his Flyers #3 instead.

Where is the photomatch on the Anderson jersey?

Dave
Sorry, should have pointed it out. The second "E" in his last name was actually an "O", as they spelled his name incorrectly. A quick fix was made, cutting the right vertical side of the "O" off, then cutting that piece in half, and sewing it horizontally across the middle of what used to be an "O", creating an "E".

It's very noticeable in the picture of the back of the jersey I posted, as well as the capture of him standing in the jersey with his back to the camera.

Yes, they auction off the set from the April 2 game against the Jazz on NBA.com. (Which is how I got mine)

The also wore the Green uniforms on April 4 against the Clippers, and that set was autographed, then auctioned off live at the Pepsi Center during game 1 of round 1 of the '09 playoffs against the Hornets.

With the help of the Hockey Tigers, I was able to pick up this nice Tom Brady on Ebay. It is a perfect photomatch to the AFC Wildcard game played on January 7th 2007 featuring the Pats. vs. the Jets.

When you are holding it in your hands, it matches up in at least 5 different places, but it gets a bit challenging when you take the photos with the flash.

By far my best find ever and unfortunately it is not for sale!

Nice pickup! Did you get the handwarmer that was listed with it too?

I've also posted this in the item's wanted section on a Troy Percival thread, but I wanted to post it here too. I've had this jersey for a couple of years now, but it wasn't until today that I was actually able to photomatch it.

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/4678/1002136f.th.jpg (http://img17.imageshack.us/i/1002136f.jpg/)

http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/3094/1002137h.th.jpg (http://img690.imageshack.us/i/1002137h.jpg/)

Luckily this jersey had a very distinctive feature that I knew would be helpful in photomatching. This is a picture of the stitching of the bat knob on my Percival jersey...

http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/5590/1002149.th.jpg (http://img227.imageshack.us/i/1002149.jpg/)

And this is what it should look like:

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/5379/1002151r.th.jpg (http://img204.imageshack.us/i/1002151r.jpg/)

Recently, I was finally able to track down a promising photo online from a Chicago photographer from 9-18-07 at Wrigley Field, so I ordered one in an 11X14 and here's the scan:

http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/8941/percival.th.jpg (http://img63.imageshack.us/i/percival.jpg/)

As you can see from the photo, I think it's pretty safe to say that I have a match. For comparison, here's a photo in which he is obviously not wearing my jersey:

Alfonso Soriano game used bat used from at least April 13, 2009 -April 23, 2009.

Notice the two black markings, its sharpie on the bat, i was almost mad when I got it because I thought soriano did it after the fact when he signed it, if you notice the black marking on the handle, the tape actually goes over it, so he must have done it before hand. The markings in sync with the middle logo, as well as the darkening on the handle, as well as proportion of pine tar. I think it's dead on.

Here is a photomatched Kevin Fagan home 1988 49ers shirt worn against the NO Saints on 12/11/88 in a 49ers victory 30-17. Note the exact same wear pattern on the front shoulders and on the front numbers. Please let me know what you think. Thanks

Picked up this Pudge bat because I was able to photo match it to a couple spring training games this year. Bat shows excellent use with a ton of pine tar on the handle. Unfortunately my camera doesn't take the greatest pics.

I just received this 2009 Ryan Church game used bat which I think I photo matched to this photo from that July 9th 2009 game. The MLB hologram is from this July 9th 2009 game.

Hard to see but the ball mark pattern in the photo seems to line up with the bat as well as the pine tar.

The clip on the side of the helmet doesn't match. It isn't the same clip because if it was just aging the two on the front would have changed too, so that doesnt help your photomatch either.

This one is VERY nice. I love bats where the ink transfers are so distinct (especially on blonde BWP, Marucci, & X-Bats)
