Never thought id be able to match this bat, Johnny damon game used Eric Hinskie model bat. The blue ink transfer in the middle of the bat by damon's forearm is perfect, and the handle. Never seem damon use a bat with a taped handle and that much tar!

The clip on the side of the helmet doesn't match. It isn't the same clip because if it was just aging the two on the front would have changed too, so that doesnt help your photomatch either.

Sorry that my photo posting skills aren't that great. Not real sure what you mean by the clips not matching? The clips on the helmet and the clips in the photo match perfectly. It also has the Prova ID Tag that was verified when I first received the helmet and matching scuff marks on the star (hard to see in that pic).

Correct me if I am wrong but A photo match is a identical mark such as a scuff, rip, dent some sort of mark making it very identifiable, And a style match is when they are wearing the same style correct?

Seems I am not the only one confused about this.

Yeah, still some have no clue what a photo match entails. A lot of style matches are mixed in here. Maybe Kyle or someone can start a new thread with only photo matches allowed.

The idea of a photomatch is that there has to be a unique mark or trait that makes is this specific bat. So as it is right now, it isn't a photomatch in my opinion. If you can, you should try and take a screenshot of the at bat and look for marks on the bat, that's your best bet. The idea is that the hologram is only to help you with finding the day, but it can't be used to call something definitive photomatch. Ricardo

I, nor to I think anyone else, is questioning that it's the same bat, I'm sure it is. As you said, another bat wasn't cracked that same inning, no question. But to call it a photomatch must be a distinct characteristic that differentiates it from all the other Phoenix bats he used.

Ridiculous. Everybody knows it is the same bat but you all want to nitpick every little detail. I am pretty sure the differentiating characteristic is the missing handle. Unless Miggy doesn't use handles. He matched his bat to a photo. I think that makes it a "photomatch". Just because he didn't match an ink transfer or rack streak doesnt change that. Spatan congrats on your photomatch and hopefully everybody that disagrees can find a more constructive use of their time.

Chill out. I don't think anybody is doubting the bat is genuine or if the bat is the same bat. That is not what is being debated here. The definition of a photomatch is definitively matching a game used piece to a photo or screen grab. This one would seem to be a pretty simple one to pull, but it might mean removing the tape and comparing the crack itself.

You're right, photomatches are nitpicking...that's kind of the point. As it stands, the photos provided do not consist of a photomatch.

The point of a photo match is that it stands alone; so, while after considering the photo and the hologram one can say with pretty much 100% certainty that the Cabrera bat is the same one broken in the given at bat, a photo match should be able to identify the bat as the same one without any other supporting information. As it stands right now, the hologram is needed to show that the bat is the same one (although as noted, removing the tape would offer a much better shot at a photo match). Mind you, that's just about the best ever style match you could get.

Its pretty simple a photomatch is an item with a distinct characteristic. such as a scuff, ding, scratch, crack, rip, pin stripes match up, loose thread, grain of wood etc something that can be compared to the item side by side in photos.

Several of the items posted here are style matched since all they are doing is posting a picture of the item and the player wearing something that looks like it which in the end means you have an item which looks like another. The point of a photomatch is to add to a COA/HOLOGRAM as its been shown before coa and holos can be wrong no matter who is issuing it.

I recently purchased a Ryan Zimmerman bat and was able to photomatch it to 3/22/2010. His number 11 was written on the outer part of the knob because Dunn's 44 was mistakenly written and scribbled out in the center. Several other marks and a strand of dark grain that runs from the center label to the Genuine stamp also match up.

In the other two shots, you can see the smeared TPX logo, along with miscellaneous ink and leather transfer. Plus, the tar gets progressively darker.

Hey Rich,

I thought that Dustin Pedroia M9 bat and floor looked familiar........the reason why the pine tar area has changed in appearance is that after Pedroia applies the pine tar, he then takes a pitchers rosin bag and dabs it against the tar, the rosin bag is a white powder and when applied to the pine tar it offers a better grip.

That action photo of Pedroia must have been taken right after the rosin was applied to the center brand area of the bat, that's why it appears white......by the time I got the bat the rosin had already wore off.

Thanks,
Bobby

maccamania,

The Pedroia bat does not appear to be photomatch. The rosin does not disappear from the bat over time. It's not uncommon to find multiple bats with similar ballmarks. Player's are extremely consistant with their contact patterns. IMHO, the bat you have appears to be a fine game used bat, just not the same one in the photo.

Rosin does disappear over time. Pine tar doesn't dry instantly and can stay moist for long periods of time. I will use the analogy of my favorite breakfast meal to explain this. When you make cinnamon toast as soon as you take the toast out of the toaster you put the butter on so the toast will melt the butter making a soft tasty landing spot for the cinnamon. Once you put the cinnamon on it no longer stays in powder form on top of the butter. It then takes on the characteristic of the oh so delicious butter and that is how cinnamon toast is made. Putting a powder substance on a moist substance it doesn't take long for the powder to mix.

Now if you were to put rosin on a bat that doesn't have a recent coat of fresh pine tar then that is a different story and the rosin might not mix leaving it available to be seen on the bat for a long time.

Can anyone else tell it is time for breakfast?

Kyle,

I prefer a pessimistic approach when it comes to photomatching. Too often a piece is declared a match based on a few similar marks.

Maccamania,

Thanks again for the additional photos, you've changed my opinion on the photomatch. I have to agree it's a match. Nice work! Enjoy the bat.

Pretty easy for this one, I was lucky to find a pic that matched up the mesh holes to the position of the numbers/letters.

This one's a lot harder to judge by the pics due to the flash in my photos but in person to look at the jersey side-by-side with the photo it's a definite match.

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u23/rubbley/NBA%20Photo-matches/th_williams02.jpg (http://s164.photobucket.com/albums/u23/rubbley/NBA%20Photo-matches/?action=view&current=williams02.jpg)

There is a distinctive thread that is loose near the armpit and the ribbing has been stretched resulting in puckering.

I don't see a photomatch. Your 3 doesnt have a loose thread like the one in the pic

23_fan
11-24-2010, 05:32 PM
Thanks for the input.

The thread you are seeing is actually a scratch on the photo. The Bulls numbers were vinyl in those days and the wordmark was screen printed.
The photo-match is in the pattern of the mesh. It is particularly evident in the Bulls letters because some of the screen printing showed holes. If you look at the pic versus my jersey these all match up. Also, the mesh pattern around the 3 matches and the logo does too. There are small exposed white pieces of thread running around the arm holes and neck hole which also directly match my jersey.
Apologies, i probably should have explained all that in the original post. Other opinions are more than welcome.

I don't see those two matches (Bradley and Bartlett); to me, it's impossible to discern that marks that happen to be in the same spot are the exact same. Heck, I have a hard time seeing some of those marks in general. The third match on the Bradley bat--the circled dot on the handle--does narrow it down a bit, however: to every maple bat used in 2009-2010.:D

Ya with the pics they're kind of hard to tell-maybe I'll try it in negative. You can definitley tell when you see the bat in person. Also, the Bradley has a COA from cubs that it was cracked 4 days after that and the Bartlett has a MLB cert that it was cracked in that game (in that AB). I have some pics of the braking that match too.

My first time to cut and paste, but here is is my match to a Teixeira Grand Slam bat. The ball mark on the barrel (just below the MLB holo in my pic)and the pattern in the mota stick match up. This was Tex's first home run as an Angel on August 3, 2008. There are several other photos I matched it to, but this one is one of the better ones. The bat is on the floor so the angle is off with the lighting correct everything matches up great.

Buster Posey, Game 3 WS. Pretty much every mark on this bat is matched. Some of the shots aren't the best, but they are all there. My favorite match is the top cup where it is dented--didn't think he used it like that and thought he slammed the bat in frustration and put the dent/crack in the cup, however he used it with the big dent and then his last at bat he grounded one off the top of the bat, which I assume did in the bat and left the crack at the top of the cupped end.

And Leslie, I did buy the only Brooks Conrad jersey on the list, but it unfortunately wasn't the jersey from his walk-off grand slam in May that I was looking for. Conrad wore 2 jerseys in 2010, 1 for each half of the season, and I ended up with his second-half jersey. So either Brooks kept it or the Braves sold it in one of their charity auctions.

Wow, those Melo shoes are sweet. What luck that getty had a nice close up of them. To show the Why?. Any idea what that was for.
Sweet match on 9-11 Jackson lid as well. Shoes and hats have to be one of the tougher things to get matched.

Actually, I just went forward a bit to 4/18/2010 and photomatched both the left and the right side of the helmet to highlights video of Alberto hitting TWO 3-RUN HOMERS in the game at Minnesota. Sweet.

I just photo matched my Venable helmet. Looks like the first one he used during last year. Photo is from April 18th, in the 7th inning after Chase Headley hit a double which turned into himself scoring on a bad throw. Venable had a bad game 0-4 with 2 K's in the win. probably the only game this helmet was used in because of the damage.

Just kinda accidentally found a match for my second Jose Guillen helmet, so spent some time matching it this morning. Turns out it was the last helmet Guillen wore as a member of the Kansas City Royals before being traded. A couple games here 8/1/10 (back of helmet shot) and his final game 8/4/10.

Here is the centerpiece of my collection! 1994 UNWASHED Jerry Rice photo-matched playoff shirt worn vs. the Bears on 1/7/95-a game I attended.

The uniform came with game worn and autographed pants, socks and cleats. It was a pretty penny, but after much back and forth and a partial trade, the purchase was agreed upon and the uni is now mine! I did not buy it from CSI but from the original owner. It has a Rice letter on 49er letterhead signed by Rice.

Also pictured is TD #141 from 1995.

Always buying 1994 49er gamers and paying UP TO A 500$ FINDERS FEE for the right shirt. Also buying any quality 49er gamer especially with a team letter.

This match comes from Brian's 2000 studio portrait photo

This Billy Butler first baseman's mitt was used for nearly the entire 2009 season, from Spring Training through the end of the season. The webbing broke sometime around 9/20/2010 and the glove was retired after the season ended a couple weeks later. Barring any unexpected changes, this will probably be the most heavily used glove of Butler's career as he played 145 Games at first base in 2009.

Unfortunately, this thread has been watered down with a bunch of stylematch postings lately. Some do not understand the difference. Others appear to just not care. The difference between a photomatch and stylematch in terms of authentication is staggering.

I agree. Some awesome, genuine photomatches are being drowned out by the style-matches.

Keep the photomatches coming!

Adam Dunn game used bat from the WBC. I'm not sure what at-bat the photo was taken during(He may have hit 2 homeruns with this bat). I know its hard to see the match, but the arks under nationals match 100%.

Hi mickeymbz, the name and both numbers on the front and back are sewn on. the only areas heat sealed are the "New York" on the front and circular "NYK" logo on the upper back.

I'm not sure what happened here though,

A couple have said this is a style match, not a photo match so let me address that. This jersey was worn for one game, and the photos are from that very game from which the jersey was authenticated. Also, I reviewed a number of Stoudemire images from throughout the season, and this is the only jersey where number is much further away from the name. This is what his other road jerseys looked like from the back.

lol...well I took that photo of Chipper after he got his 2,500th hit. I noticed in the full-resolution file that I can just barely see through his pants, so I darkened the area in Photoshop and that's why you can see the "S2" so clearly.

And I KNOW mine is a photomatch b/c it has light wear, and the only game the Titans wore this style jersey that Javon played in is against the Bucs from that preseason (I checked Getty and everywhere).

Now if I posted photomatches for all my game used gloves I've caught I think I'd hijack the thread...not something I should do right? LOL

A new pickup, 2009 Jorge Posada bat, with use matched up to about a two week period in June of that year.
It has some unique markings/stamps that made it easy to photo match. Also found a picture of the bat actually cracking.
