i was perusing the current GFC auction and saw this jersey: http://www.greyflannelauctions.com/LotDetail.aspx?lotid=21667&searchby=0&searchvalue=None&page=0&sortby=0&displayby=2&lotsperpage=100&category=3

the patch struck me as being off. i compared it to these 2 1992 ozzie smith home shirts:

http://www.guuauctions.com/site/bid/bidplace.asp?itemid=1675&getauctionid=12

http://www.americanmemorabilia.com/Auction_Item.asp?Auction_ID=38400

the GUU and AMI patches are the same. the GFC patch is different. the GUU and AMI patches have a thick white outline around the entire patch and the font thickness of the text on the patch is noticeably different.

i'm not sure why. jeff scott?

Rudy,

I own the Ozzie jersey that was on AMI and I also own a '92 Bob Tewksbury. With the exception of the All Star Tour patch on the right sleeve of my Ozzie jersey, mine is very consistent with the one being offered on GUU Auctions. The GFC Ozzie has two differences: one is the addition of the 1" shorter tag, and the other is the 100th anniversary patch. Not only is the GFC patch a lower quality product (retail?), but the stitching that attaches it is not even close to the stitching on my '92 jerseys or the GUU jersey. On correct jerseys, the stitching is small and tight; the stitching on the GFC jersey is a large zig zag.

That begs the question, why would anyone attach a retail patch to what otherwise looks like a very nice Ozzie jersey? Is it possible this jersey was worn in '93, but because it was tagged '92, someone felt the need to add the patch that was worn in '92? Can't answer that. But, based on the '92 patches I've seen, I'm confident saying the GFC jersey's patch clearly is inconsistent. Nice catch, Rudy.

Jeff

Nice catches.. I'm not a baseball guy, but I decided to give all 3 jerseys a glance and noticed a difference on the GFC vs. GUU/AMI with regards to the Rawlings/Set tag.

It could be something totally bogus and a non-issue, but it seems the GFC tag has some extra threads where the 'Set 2' and '1 inch' tags are along the edge where the GUU/AMI look nice and even/single stitch??
Don't know, maybe it's nothing, but when you brought up about the patch stitching, I noticed this and thought it was odd to me since the GUU/AMI both stitching is even/single line and identical.

GUU (AMI's pic is smaller, but looks identical as GUU):

i thought the right side of the mfr tag looked odd but i wasn't able to get the enlarged photo as i'm not registered with GFC. (a new "feature" apparently. you can only enlarge the images if you're a registered user). the enlarged images shown here clearly indicate the right side has been opened up and resewn. good of GFC to catch that. while we're at it, the "1 inch" tag is atypical in that it seems to have been cut in half. here is what those tags typically looked like:

seems like someone took one of those tags, cut it in half (perhaps because it said "extra length" and the jersey doesn't have any extra length) and ran it through a typewriter and typed the word "shorter" above it.

jeff, i'm starting to think it isn't an otherwise nice ozzie gamer. i'm starting to think the whole thing was made up; from the doctored rawlings tag to the odd "1 inch" tag to the retail patch.

Glad I noticed it too! Hey, I contributed something :) lol...

Yea, funny that if someone really did add the '1 inch' tag, why did they seem to cut it in half and re-attach. Why not do less work and just attach it was '1 inch Extra Length' as your other examples show.
That I condone ADDING ANYTHING to the jersey, but just weird that someone would go through more trouble/work that necessary.

Hmm, time to stick at bidding on the GUU one and not GFC's! :)

because visually you can tell the jersey doesn't have extra length added. putting an extra length tag on a jersey that doesn't have extra length would set off even more red flags. it's been shortened and hemmed very nicely though.

I really wish the FBI had real interest in this kind of thing :(

it appears the jersey has been removed.
