Question on 1988 Billy Martin Jersey

This is not in regards to a specific auction jersey, but more of a general question with regard to number fonts worn by the 1988 Yankees. I came across this photo in a 1990 spring training magazine that had a tribute to Billy Martin. The caption states the photo was taken during his last spring training in 1988. I thought the Yankees always had the "Varsity" style cut rather than the "Pro Block”? I have not come across any other photos with this style cut for Billy Martin, or other players.
