Update on the Epps jersey!

I was able to watch the 9/18/1994 game versus the Vikings and now have no doubts whatsoever that this jersey is game used. I have many screen grabs and things seem to match us as well as can be expected from a VHS copy of the game...

It was not offered as game used but as a vintage jersey. Even though the tag has a size, it was offered as a "Large" It sold for strong money and I think someone thought that it was game used...

The tagging is not consistent with the 70's Wilson's that I've seen and the sleeves are too long in my opinion...

I personally like it. The Wilson tag, in particular, points it towards being from the team. In that era, Wilson tags were only printed with a size up to 46. 48s and 50s were often orignally blank in the size location, with either a numbered size tag like this, a handwritten size, or a size embroidered directly on the tag. Douglass was a big guy, so everything seems to make sense.

This one came from the king of football game used, Roger...

Here's the home jersey of Freakman Bryan Cox. The jersey was used throughout the 1997 season and shows tons of repairs and hit marks.

Anthony Hutchison was drafted by the Chicago Bears as the 5th pick in the 10th round of the 1983 NFL draft.
He began the 1983 season as a kick returner starting 16 games and gaining 259 yards that season. In 1994 he was a starter on the offense playing 12 games as a receiver and a running back.

There are multiple repairs and small holes throughout. Easily photomatched to both seasons.

The GSH patch was removed but the remnants of the glue are still there.

This also may be the only jersey T-Zak wore throughout his entire career with the Bears but since his early career was as the number 3 on the depth charts, as well as modifications that appear to have been made to this jersey trough the years, it might prove difficult to conclusively photomatch it to the 1985 - 1987 seasons... If it is the only away jersey he wore, then this shirt saw service in the 1985 Superbowl!


In 16 NFL seasons, Tomczak played for the Bears, Packers, Browns, Steelers and Lions. He threw for more than 16,000 yards and 87 touchdowns.

Nice one, Sam. And, of course, he was part of the Super Bowl XX champs team. If I recall correctly, he even played in SB20, although it was garbage time due to the slaughter the Bears were performing on the Patriots.

Here's the latest addition to my collection:

Circa 1986/87 Neal Anderson away jersey. This is easily one of the most pounded jerseys I have in my collection. It shows tremendous use with pulverized shoulders and repairs holding other repairs in place.

Based on tagging, this is a late 70's jersey so there's also a pretty good chance that it was worn by Roland Harper in the late 70's/early 80's

What are everyones thoughts on what the Bears exactly do with their jerseys now? No company like JO sports , rarely if ever have any jerseys on NFL auctions.. Are they all going to the card companies? It's a shame they don't sell them anymore

Chicago Bears have always been known as a frugal team with regards to their equipment. If you look at the jerseys all the way into the early 2000's you'll find jerseys with full seasons worth of use. I personally own jerseys that have been worn for multiple years. Once the equipment was beyond game use, it was worn during the practices. There are many pictures from late 70's and early 80's where you can see gamers worn at practice...

Today, nothing changed... The equipment manager holds on to equipment like it's coming out of his paycheck... I've been to several Chicago Bears events and noticed that the jerseys they use for show and tell show obvious signs of multiple game use. Attached are two jerseys from separate events that showcase my point...

I bet that there's a room somewhere in the basement of Halas Hall that has a stockpile of all the jerseys that we're trying to get our hands on...

About a year ago I posted a sweet Calvin Thomas jersey (http://www.gameuseduniverse.com/vb_forum/showpost.php?p=370346&postcount=1669) I picked up and was pretty sure it was a 1985 jersey.

After some photomatching, I have it matched to the entire 1985, 1986 and 1987 seasons.

Here is a Gayle Sayers nameplate I acquired about 12 years ago. It is made of a blue dureen material and has the proper font on the S and R (footed). It has stitch holes around the border and is in great shape. I believe it may be authentic. I got it in a large collection of game used stuff and always wondered if it was authentic from a Sayers uniform. I believe it could have only be from 1970 because I thought the Bears stitched the letters directly on the back of the uniform with out a plate in 1971. You guys are very knowledgeable and I hope you can help me out and tell me if it's real and maybe a ballpark value.

1970 is the first year NFL mandated the use of the last name after the AFL/NFL merger.

I personally don't like the font on the "R" It is not consistent with the few examples from the early 70's that I've seen. Attached is the only early 70's home jersey that I have seen (With letter "R" in the name) made out of durene and sporting a stitched letters on a name plate.

Jim Seymour (84) played for the Bears from 1970 to 1972 and Jack Concannon (11) played from 1967 to 1971 so the name plate must have been a short lived style that was possibly only worn during 1971 through 1972 seasons. In 1973 the jersey material changed to the mesh body...

Interestingly, the Ross Brupbacher played with the Bears from 1970 through 1973 so there must have been 2 variations of the letter "R" in use during the same time period...

I have done some photo digging for early 1970's and found the attached picture of Bennie McRae. His last season with the Bears was 1970.

This is a set (Jersey and pants) that was worn on 10/16/2006 vs Arizona. This was the game where Arizona coach Dennis Green was seething. Judging by his comments, he clearly didn't believe the Bears lived up to the hype -- or deserved to win. "The Bears are who we thought they were!" he said, yelling at the top of his lungs and pounding on the podium at his post game press conference. "Now, if you want to crown them, then crown [them]! But they are who [we] thought they were! And we let them off the hook!" Green then stormed away.

Johnny "The Italian Stallion" Musso Johnny Musso, described as a "bulldozing blocker and breakaway runner," made All-America in 1970 and 1971. As a senior he was fourth in the Heisman vote and was named Player of the Year by Football News, the Miami Touchdown Club, and the Touchdown Club of Atlanta. Musso was a 2-time Academic All-America. In 1971, he received the National Football Foundation scholarship. The American Football Coaches Association gave him the Ernie Davis Award. While in college, he spoke to youth groups. After a pro career in the Canadian League (1972-74) and with the Chicago Bears in the NFL (1975-77) Johnny was a rookie in 1975 and only played 2 games that season. This shirt was worn during the week 14 match-up at New Orleans versus the Saints. Johnny recorded 6 attempts while gaining 33 yards.

I like this jersey. Mid-1970s Bears jerseys don't grown on trees...I see more of the early 70's gamers.

FINALLY! I was able to photo match my Terry Schmidt gamer that was reissued to DB Mike Hintz for the 1987 pre-season. Being that there is a piece of extra material covering the outline of an old GSH shoulder patch from the 1983 season, I felt very confident that Schmidt wore this at some point. I'm very happy to now know that I have a perfect photo match to prove it.

Here's one of my newest additions; a Devin Hester TD return jersey. The jersey was worn in 2010 against the Vikings during Favre's last game.

Here's a recent pick up. 2013 Matt Forte throwback jersey that was worn during both throwback games. It's photomatched as well as has over 1/2 dozen repairs.

It was traded to another player at the end of the 2nd game.

Here's another exciting pick-up. 2012 away Brandon Marshall TD jersey. It was given to another player at the conclusion of the game and is photomatched to that game.

Almost every B-Marsh Bears jersey has been traded away to other players...
The only other jersey that was up for sale (as far as I know) was sold through Hunt Auctions and it came from NFL Auctions originally...

Here's one of my latest pick-ups...

This is the 4th Jay Cutler jersey to pass through my collection... Each time I seem to find an even better example. Last one was great but a forum member really wanted it and I obliged...

Cutler wore this jersey against the Washington Redskins on 12/13/2015 while tossing 315 passing yards and 2 touchdowns with 0 interceptions...
This jersey was traded with a Redskins player at the conclusion of the game...

Picked up this awesome Willie Gault jersey. First one in years that has real use and not some team issued or store bought jersey with questionable repairs! Try googling "Willie Gault game used" and compare those jerseys to any game photo...
While researching the possible year(s) when this one might have been used, I came up on a high res shot of Willie Gault and Richard Dent congratulation each other at the end of Super Bowl XX against the New England Patriots at the Superdome on January 26, 1986 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Little zooming and I have a match! Not just a match but a definitive photomatch!

With Covid19 I've had some free time in the evenings... I've chatted with some fellow collectors and did some time consuming photomatching...
I've owned this jersey since 2015 and always felt that this away gamer was worn by Mike Tomczask for majority of his career with Chicago... Today I decided to see how far back I can match it...
I'm happy to say that I have now photomatched it to the SuperBowl XX. In the bottom picture you can see Mike celebrating the victory at the end of the game with Tim Wright. A little zooming and the holes line up perfectly all over the jersey! The easiest place to see it is in the above 2 photos.
This is now a 2nd SuperBowl XX worn jersey in my collection.
As you can see, it has been modified over the years but it's the same jersey! The 2nd photomatch is sometime in 1988 according to Getty Images...
