No, this is not common at all. In today's times, with the booming business of game used memorabilia, I wouldn't even think it happens at all. Jerseys are generally tagged with some variation of a year tag, which indicates the year in which they were worn. In some cases, multiple dozens of jerseys can be issued to a player per year.

The jerseys are the property of the team, not the player. The team generally sells the jerseys to the public during the season through memorabilia contracts, auctions, team stores, internet, mailing lists, etc. Some conduct fire sales before the start of the new season where they blow out excess inventory.

Unless you've got a thing like Bonds apparently did, toward the end of his career - where he was buying his own jerseys, etc, and keeping everything to sell, himself.

This reminds me of something I saw during the Arizona Fall League, before one of the last games of the season between the Scottsdale Scorpions and Phoenix Desert Dogs. Both teams had players from Japan on their rosters, for the first time in the AFL, and before the game, they were on the field, guys from both teams, taking off their jerseys and putting one another's jerseys on, then taking them off and giving them back. Never seen that before...assuming it's a Japanese Baseball thing.

Some player's today don't even wear a jersey the whole game. Dirk Nitrowski changes his jersey at halftime every single game as one example.

It's quite common in pro soccer for players to exchange jerseys with the rival team after the game, they likely go through more than any other sport.

            Legaleagle,

Your statement regarding Dirk Nowitzki is not correct.

We represent the Dallas Mavericks as part of the NBA and MeiGray Game-Worn Jersey Authentication Program.

Nowitzki does change jerseys at halftime, but he wears the same two jerseys (changing at halftime each game so he has a dry jersey) for numerous games, as part of the Mavericks' sets of jerseys that are marketed by NBA & MGG.

So in Set 1, while most players will have one white and one dark ... Nowitzki will have two whites and two darks.

That is different than wearing a different jersey every single half.

            Hope this clarifies,
            Barry
