For anyone looking to restore a 1978 Padres jersey, there is someone selling an original shoulder patch on Ebay. I just happen to come across it and thought I would pass the info along

The reproduction 1978 patch that I am familiar with (see below) measures 4 inches in diameter, has thinner font than the original, , and the Friar's head is shaped differently at the top than the original.
