I did some research and actually called 3 football teams instead of worrying about photomatching. I sent pictures of these jerseys up for auction to the teams, and here are the ones that came back bad:

Chris Chambers-

Sleeves are too long.

Ronnie Brown-

Tony the equip manager confirms that in his only year as a Dolphin, Ronnie has never worn a full length jersey, they are all cut and hemmed, and have an elastic waistband. In fact 85% of 2005 jerseys are all cut and hemmed.

Junior Seau-

Sane story, he did not wear a full length jersey in 2004, and it should have an elastic waistband. The sleeves are also too long.

Ladanian Tomlinson-

The last few years, he only wore jerseys that are cut, and should have an elastic waistband. This is confirmed by the Chargers and I also have an extensive collection of Chargers jerseys. Every real Tomlinson I have seen is beat up and this one looks like it was barely used

Santana Moss-
http://www.historicauctions.com/search/list/auctionid/32797/
His jerseys are also cut.

Rod Woodson-
http://www.historicauctions.com/search/list/auctionid/32727/
"This home jersey shows very good game use including several team repairs and the numbers are puckered due to the jersey being washed repeatedly"

Considering Rod Woodson played 1 game in 1995, and tore his ACL, the staff must have been busy doing repairs during that one game.

Willie Parker-

This is just WRONG! The font, the cut. More info here

Tom Brady-
http://www.historicauctions.com/search/list/auctionid/32628/
Bernie Gernay had one up about 3 weeks ago. The sleeves were way to short and it only sold for $2000. Brady's should go for 6K-7K. It is also covenient that the picture was taken down as soon as it sold. Is it also unusual that there are 2 Tom Brady's out there in the last few months and they both happened to be Bernie's?

great work there davis!

and if you look at the neck tag of the moss skins jersey is has a (04-44)...santana moss did not start playing for the skins until 2005! the tag should say (05-44)!!!!!!!!

historic to me has to pull several of the football items. i am not 100% sure but it think this is the first time i have ever seen an auction house use bernie to authenticate items and after all the mishaps this could be his last. historic has been granted way more than enough time to respond, pull the items, and appologize. i dont think it would be a smart business move to have bernie bck authenticating items imo. i think alot of damage to the image of this auction house was done in this auction weather they pull the jerseys mentioned or not. you can see many of the prices of other items are being affected.

Just do a search on this forum for "Peyton Manning sleeves" and see what you come up with.

As I've said before, from my standpoint there should not be a single item up from an auction house without there being absolute 100% authenticity. If that means signed documents from suppliers, equipment managers, trainers, and the player himself to verify a particular item, that's what it takes. To take my favorite Apparition-American's word for everything from 1952 batboy game pants to a 2004 Schutt helmet to a turn-of-the-century whatever is insane.

You are absolutely correct on the Ronnie Brown. I have the one that sold at the Superbowl Auction this year and it has the elastic in the tail. I also have a Seau from the Dolphins and the Tomlinson I mentioned in my thread and both are shortened ans have elastic in the hem. The Tory Holt should also be shortend as I have 2 with Wetrac validation.

Nathan, so you should only buy items from team auctions and mlb.com.

Oh wait, last auctions from mlb.com people found issues with their use of the term "game used".

Unless you get the item off the player's back in the locker room, you'll never have 100% guarantees. Then, when you try to sell it, the person buying it from you will have doubts, so there may not then be 100% authenticity.

The Julius Pepperts is also a fake. I have a Peppers jersey from that same year(also white) and he uses a crotchpiece. Also, he has NEVER worn a jersey that has sleeves thgat long with stripes that go all the way under! This site seems to be as crooked as they come!

Joel,

Not quite what I had in mind. For starters, I'd love to see a complete standardization of various terms. Heck, how many authentic jerseys (or, in some cases, poor quality replicas) are sold on eBay as "team-issued" or "game-issued"?

It's not like I'm talking about an auction house or authenticator having to do battle with Goliath here. Look at it this way. If a team is interested in trading for a player who's suffered a severe injury, the first thing that the interested team's GM is going to do is talk to his own trainers to get more info on it....he then will pick up the phone and contact experts in the field to make sure he has as much UNBIASED information as possible before making a major roster move (which, of course, has far-reaching personnel and financial ramifications).

Let's use my Tennessee football collection as an example. I purchased a decent number from Scott Kent at collegejersey.com and a few more from the University's athletic department. I think highly of Scott, but from the overwhelming amount of inventory he personally (nor his authenticators) can do extensive research on specific jerseys. Scott, of course, has already explained this entire process in other posts on this forum...I don't think for a second that he sells bad gear, but they simply lack the time and means to do as much research into particular items as someone who makes that their focus would be able to.

If I were to sell or consign one of these items, I'd first have a letter from Scott saying that his company was the original source I acquired from. There would also be a letter from me stating the extent of the research that I have done on each one. And I would also like to have one from one (or both) of the University's two equipment managers that verify that this item was in fact issued or used in a game....and also clear up any loose ends that I may have missed or not have the means to explore.

I have a heck of a time thinking that NFL guys in the equipment room are so incredibly difficult to track down that an auction house will simply list a bunch of items, no questions asked, while taking the word of an authenticator who may or may not have a financial stake (and also may or may not appear to be heavily intoxicated while authenticating junk). The idea of someone listing a Brett Favre jersey with lineman sleeves, a Michael Vick jersey that seems to exist in two places simultaneously, or a Reggie Bush USC jersey WITHOUT the authenticator and the auction house both doing THEIR homework is absolute lunacy.

As I said a couple paragraphs earlier, there are some thing about jerseys I own or have owned where there is a missing piece of the puzzle that I lack the means to explore fully. Don't think for a second that I'm satisfied to just say "That's the end of the road"...I continue trying to fit everything together. And these are over jerseys that most people wouldn't pay more than $100 for. For a hotly-desired item with an enormous pricetag, there needs to be more due diligence on the part of authenticators and auction houses alike.

By the way, there was a nice Peyton Manning UT Citrus Bowl jersey that was sold about a year ago...signed off on by Lampson with no actual explanation of why.
