Mike Cuellar of the Orioles Passes Away!!

    Rest in Peace........

    Former Orioles hurler Cuellar dies

Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Former Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Mike Cuellar passed away on Friday at the age of 72.

Cuellar, a native of Cuba who lost his battle with stomach cancer, played 15 seasons in the majors (1959; 1964-77) after being signed as a free agent by Cincinnati in 1957.

His best seasons came with the Orioles from 1969-76, where he posted a 143-88 mark with a 3.18 earned-run average in 290 games (283 starts), and was a four- time All-Star selection.

Cuellar was a co-recipient of the AL Cy Young in 1969 with a 23-11 mark and 2.38 ERA, then followed that with a 24-8 record with a 3.48 ERA, four shutouts and 21 complete games for Baltimore's 1970 World Series championship team.

He finished his career with a mark of 185-130 with a 3.14 ERA in 453 games (379 starts), along with 172 complete games and 36 shutouts with the Reds, Cardinals, Astros, Orioles and Angels.

Very good as an Astro, and a Cy Young winner with Baltimore. Also broke into the majors very young, as his first season was 1959 with two games pitched for the Reds (he had his rookie card in Topps' high number series that year, as well. Two rings ('64 Cardinals, '70 Orioles), and a gr3eat career...he will be missed.

Crazy Horse will indeed be missed. My thoughts and prayers to his family. He pitched one of the best screwballs in baseball. It is sad that Palmer is now the last living member of Baltimore's 20 game winner club of 1971 now that Cuellar, McNally and Dobson have all passed away.

I grew up an O's fan. McNally, Palmer, Cuellar and Dobson.

Our thoughts go out to the Cuellar family.
