Has anyone ever been afraid to ask for help on an item on this forum over an item they have seen on ebay as it could be a hidden gem or steal?

I bought the bat as the risk was very little over the potential reward to pass up but for acouple weeks now I have debated bringing the item to the forums attention as it was a buy it now item. I was very afraid if i linked people up to the item someone might snatch it up before I could get my answers.

Has anyone else ever had this problem?

Oh just in case u were wondering the item. I collect Andruw Jones items. I have others of the same bat so I am confident in it originally being ment for Andruw. The number on the bottom of the bat is # 10. Andruw has only played with 2 #10s one being Chipper Jones and the other being Michael Young. Either way I think i got a great deal. I got the bat for the current Andruw Jones game used bat going rate on ebay which is $65.00-100. So regardless of which one of these 3 guys used it I got a great deal but I really wanted answers before buying it. Anyone know of Chipper or Michael Young using any of Andruws bats?

A good member to contact would be Kylehess he follows the Braves / Andruw Jones.

I am sure he would be able to help you narrow down the possibilities.

no because everyone on here is up on all the auctions and when you buy something it is not easy to return it so if i wasnt sure id rather miss out then have a hassle with a bad item.

Most forum members respect that unwritten rule and don't steal the item from underneath other collectors. I've found that this forum really is full of knowledge and wrls more to the collectors advantage more times then not. Sharing makes us all better collectors, wiser. I will also add that you'll find others with similar interests and that will normally help you the collector as you network with others and are able to obtain more items then you wouldve without other collectors. Also, communicating with other collectors can help you when purchasing/bidding on items (you won't compete with each other out of respect).

Legal also put it well when he said that most of us forum members are in the know of what's going on. I've purchased items in the past from members and/or readers that don't post or rarely do because I posted about items in the past. Use that 93 Thomas game used jersey that has been talked about on the forum for the past two weeks. It educated everyone and potentially helped people be smarter in their individual quest for a Thomas gamer. Have faith. If you are thinkin about dropping some serious coin I'd rather make an educated decision than one on speculation. Also, a lot of our members are specialists in their own right and are receptive to private emails and/or pm's. Hope that helps to ease your mind.

The bat brand is Old Hickery. I have found images of Andruw using this brand bat so I know its something he has used and had made for him. I havent been able to find any pictures of Chipper using anything but Rawlings and Louisville Sluggers though.

Well its good to know that people on this forum are honest and willing to help.

Is the #10 on the knob end?

I think that Wade and Leagle summed it up perfectly. Most of us do have a good idea as to what is available in our areas of interest and would never go out of our way to do anything that would appear to be unethical.

Having said that, At times, it can be a bit uncomfortable when you are actively watching or bidding on an Auction item and someone posts it on the Forum.

At times I wonder If people "over broadcast" what they might be interested in?

At times I wonder if people are truely interested, or just out gathering info?

At times I think folks do an incredibly good job of hiding what they are looking at while gathering info.....which I fully subscribe to.

I must admit, in the past (especially E-bay) I have already been looking at an item....seen it on the forum..... and then adjust my strategy accordingly when I see people chatting about it.

So.....I guess my answer is yea, I am sometimes afraid to ask for help, but realize that I need to watch out for my own best interest and proceed with caution and try to gather information without fully exposing my intentions.

What the hey....with the nature of our hobby, we are going to be constantly bidding against each other anyways. As long as you act in "GOOD FAITH" and don't go out of your way to purposely screw someone else everything seems to work just fine!......There is plenty of stuff to go around.:)

This is common around here. This is often why a Private Collector can & will charge more for an Item, Bats in particular!

Ebay Sellers will often not provide good pics & I certainly wont spend my Cash on a Bat that way, specially if I have a few questions.

I know of one seller that provided 11 images all of the same Barrel side, say what???

I know there has been an item that I had been following for awhile and someone posted on here about it and within an hour there were multiple additional bids. I can see both ends, most of the members here are respectful when it comes to that, but this forum is often read my many who aren't members and may not care in the least about a moral issue like this. I would say that I trust all the member whom I have dealt with, even in those times where money is exchanged prior to receiving items which I wouldn't do if I didn't know the person from here.

That was my biggest fear of wanting to get questions on the bat before I used buy it now. I was afraid if I posted the link and asked if it could have been used by Chipper or Michael Young that someone would have seen it and snatched it up before I got my answers.

In the end though I figured I either got an Andruw Jones bat for his 2-3 yr slump value or I got a great deal on a Chipper or Michael Young used bat, or some random no namer. Figured I got a 75% chance its a great item for the cost.

The same thing happened to me recently on an item on Ebay. I wasn't necessarily asking for help, but others were discussing it, while I was doing my homework and I felt the need to move a bit quicker with my due dilligence!

The funny thing is that so many GU items big or small are purchased by someone who can be found on the forum. Even after you have lost out on an item, you almost always know where alot of the items end up.

Maybe we should communicate more often, so we are not beating eachother up on NFL Auctions!

I will never talk about an item on here that I am truly interested in, especially if it has a buy it now option where you won't even have a chance to bid. What I have found is that you don't dare talk about generalities of items (such as Astros rainbow jerseys, 1980's cubs jerseys, etc.) let alone putting a link to a specific item. Many years ago I was watching a particular jersey (a White Whale of mine) that had been listed on the Ebay Store but wasn't a brand new listing. I was doing my research before opting for the Buy It Now. My research included internet searches, photo review and I was lucky enough to have the player's contact information. I sent an email to the player and asked a reputable forum member some questions (off the board). My mistake was that I also posted a real general question about this certain style of uniform. I did not provide a link or the player name in this post. However, the very general information was enough for someone to run to ebay, do a search, and purchase it. I'm sure neither the player nor the forum member purchased it. However, I am quite certain someone on here did as within 30 minutes of my post it was gone.

I try not to ask questions about auctions that are going on because like others the price soemtimes will go higher know. Also i will say that i have done it in the past looked at other items and tried to buy them that members have posted a question about. But these are only items on craiglists that they think no one will find it. Best thing to do is just do the research yourself, teach yourself what to look for.

If its a BIN item, you can consider it gone if you post it on here. Most guys here would probably let you have it, but there are a lot of lurkers who won't.

If its an item that the seller doesn't realize what he/she has and you post it here, you might as well consider the auction ended. Because someone will make an offer to end it early. Case in point the Cliff Hagan jersey from a few years ago. Seller ended early and the jersey sold a few months later at an auction house for $10k. http://www.gameuseduniverse.com/vb_forum/showthread.php?t=10800&highlight=hagan

Remember, for every member that reads your post; there are probably another 10 lurkers who read it.

I will often weigh the risk of taking a chance on the item versus asking for help and getting the green light on the item. Like others have said, there are plenty of lurkers and non members that will find information posted on here and use it to grab the item from under you or bid it up.

I think that these post will show up in some online search engines. Therefore anybody that goes to do research on the item by a doing a google search, will be directed to the forum here on GUU.

Sometimes you have to take a chance on something being a diamond in the rough. I have found some over the years, and have also ended up with some junk (luckily I didn't go too high on them).

It helps to have other members' contact info so that you don't have to post qs that the whole world can see. I.e. you know x person is very knowledable on ARod stuff and the item is an Arod item so you contact him off of here.

Not sure if anyone sees this, but this might help you out....

I just purchased an LS Andruw Jones from last year with the 125th logo on it. His #25 on the knob. Sweet bat overall.

On the barrel end is #10. Last year he played with Michael Young. I think its safe to say that this bat was either used by both or Young used it.

The same could be said about yours. I just find it odd because I just bought the bat without even knowing a #10 was on the barrel end. Then when I got it today, I saw the #10 and automatically thought of this thread.

Welp, hope this helps.
