I am confused by this item:

This bat has the filled MLB player logo that I thought dated it to around 2001, but MEARS dates it to 1988/1989. Was there a period where they placed the logo like this in 88/89? I was not aware of it. Yet there is no team name...should be on there in 2001.
I am also thrown becasue this bat has his late career tape job on it (consistent with 2001, not 1988).
Can someone please explain?
