View Full Version : I need 2nd opinions on a #6 Yankees Griffey jersey

I put an early bid in on this item and did not win it. I have been traveling through the week and kinda forgot about it. Well, the auction ended and I got a second chance offer on it.

My questions are ...

1) Does the bidding on this jersey appear to be "fishy?'

2) Does the jersey look like it "could be" a Griffey?

I've sent a message to the seller seconds after getting the second chance offer and I am waiting for an explanation on things.

But I am curious ... for you Yankee people esp. is this a legit jersey and if so, is a second chance offer on this a good deal? Typically this is one that I would have passed on, but Griffey is from Western PA, so I took a shot at it, once the bidding got weird, I bailed.

Any thoughts on authenticity here? I don't know the tagging well enough to make a decision. This was one that I would have taken a chance on and done the homework later once in hand. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The item ...

Just to update; the response via eBay from this seller ...

"THE OFFER WAS NOT MADE TO ONLY YOU, IT WAS MADE TO ALL BIDDERS... I RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM THE WINNING BIDDER ADVISING THAT UNFORTUNATELY THEY HAD RUN INTO SOME FINANCIAL TROUBLE AND WOULD BE UNABLE TO PURCHASE THE ITEM... FOR THAT REASON I MADE SECOND CHANCE OFFERS TO ALL OF THE BIDDERS ... MY SON LISTED THIS ITEM THAT WAS GIVEN TO HIM BY HIS GRANDFATHER BECAUSE HE DOES NOT COLLECT BASEBALL ITEMS (FOOTBALL ITEMS YES BUT NOT BASEBALL)..."

Photos on the Griffey, if anybody can help with the Yankees tagging, please let me know. Thanks.

That's what I was thinking. It was just as if they were trying to push my proxy. Now all of a sudden I get a second chance offer? I dunno on that one. If I can find out that the jersey is legit, I may get it. I think it's certainly worth the risk IF I can figure out IF it's legit and the tags match what Griffey wore.

The thing that bothers me with Yankees jerseys is that you don't know what the MiLB stuff is and what the actual Yankees used. At lest I don't without a nameplate and dated tags, who knows?

Could it be legit? Sure, but the bidding part still bothers me. Nothing like a zero feedback eBayer bidding like an idiot. Why does this happen to me when I am a buyer instead of a seller???? Geesh! lol

Just weird, everybody there has a low feedback score except me .... HUMMMM?????? ; )

To be real honest both of you should be happy you never won it. If I recall those are retail tags. I cannot remember a Yankee jersey that looked like that infact I know I have never seen one before.

I also would like to state that in 1982 Wilson made the New York Yankees jersey's.

1973 to 1991 Wilson (some say 1975 Road Jersey Made By Rawlings)

1992 to 2004 Russell Athletic

2005 to Present Majestic

Very interesting, thanks for the 411! I think this little scam just blew up in their face. My gut tells me that the bidding here was a complete sham. Between the tagging and the bidding, something on this one just ain't right! I'll let this one pass and see what the seller does next. My guess is the the 3 days on the second chance offer will pass and I'll get a message asking about working some kinda deal. Just watch.

BTW ... is there any chance that this is a MiLB jersey or is this a designed jersey trying to fool a buyer? Just curious. Thanks again. I'm liking this forum more and more.

Sand-Knit NEVER made Yankees gamers, and a 38 wouldn't have fit Ken Sr. even when he was a rookie with the Reds. You lost out on nothing:).

"no problem ... I hope that your research allows you to feel more certain about the item ... If you're still interested let me know what additional photos you would like to be provided with ... I can assure you that the jersey is in very good condition ... The jersey was very well kept by my son's grandfather ... and since being passed on to my son it has not been touched until now ... it has all of it's original tags and buttons ... there are no apparent imperfections, no loose stitching, nor holes ... I do welcome the opportunity for a smooth transaction ...Thanks .... I was just about to post this response from the seller."

... again, I don't know what this is, but I'm pretty sure that this is not a legit Griffey. Thanks for the help everybody.

BTW .... that quote was the most recent response from the seller. Just to be clear on that post. I did not enter that very well (too big of a hurry). MY BAD! ;)

Let's just say he has another auction up right now, for a cell phone, and what do you know? The same guy with zero feedback who bid up the Yankees jersey is also bidding on the cell phone auction!

What a small world!

That one's not even close to an authentic. Coupled with the shill bidding, steer clear of that seller.

The other phone the sidekick he allready had listed and the bidder with 0 feedback who has bid on all his items won it the first time it was listed.

WOW ... I looked and sure enough, you are right! I guess these people think that others are not smart enough to figure it out?

I have had to deal with more eBay issues in the past two weeks than I have in a long time. Non paying winners, sellers refusing to sell, now shill bidding and generally eBay does nothing. It's the wild west on eBay right now folks ... do whatever you want. I report fake jerseys and autographs and waste my time doing it and seldom do I see the stuff get pulled. I don't know what eBay's deal is but the integrity over there has taken a beating in my eyes in just the past two weeks. It's pathetic. eBay seems to be getting worse instead of better. It almost makes me want to start my own eBay with strict collectors guidelines and rules. Who's in? ; )

As I predicted .... HILARIOUS!

My most recent message from the seller ....

"what we know for sure is that nearly thirty years ago my son's grandfather did attend a baseball game with some friends of his and at that game he obtained the jersey. Again, we dont know much about baseball nor the value of this jersey we dont have any use for it and thats why we listed the item on ebay and hope someone else will have more interest and use for it. Given your knowledge of basseball jerseys what do you suggest or are willing to pay for this item?"

Ummmmm? NO! Thanks for playin! : )
