Hi guys, new here, picked up about this site on the JC site. This isn't really a game used question, but since I don't have a spare $40K to spend on a 1940 Sid Luckman, I figured this was the best place to ask. Does anyone know what type of twill material the Bears used in those years on the away jerseys? Anyone ever seen one in person? The only good picture I can find is from the Polo Grounds and it's tough to tell.

I was able to find good auction photos of 40's home jerseys and the twill almost looks like it resembles a canvas or courdoroy sort of material... I'm trying to turn what I have into an authentic reproduction....

Looks like a heavyweight wool and durene cotton blend. This is before "mercerized" durene was the standard. Numerals appear to be satin twill.

Here is a lengthy discussion on GUU Forum regarding a 1940's Luckman Jersey

and the subsequent auction listing that has a description and pics

Welcome to the forum. Be sure to check out the search function (horizontal menu at top of forums) and such areas as Experts corner, etc. for over 5 years worth of game Used information.

Many thanks for the replies. Wow, that was a very fascinating and informative read, which I read in its entirety. Unfortunately, there weren't any pics of Luckman in away jerseys in the thread for me to evaluate. Getty has nothing either, and the only one other truly usable picture than the one I linked initially I can find on google images is this one:

Still, font matching isn't a huge deal since that Polo Grounds shot is pretty clear; I just want to get the texture as correct as possible.

Both-Teams, are you fairly certain the away jersey pictured would have satin twill similar to the home gamer? (not looking for an absolute ruling, just trying to be accurate!)

An Ebay search for Sid Luckman photo brings up a few, both home and away, including the one below, that may be helpful.

No. It might actually be tackle twill. The wrinkles look like satin. I recently sold a 1948-1950 Browns jersey with satin numerals. Not 100% positive.

Though I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, I've been looking all the pics over in the past several days, and I'm starting to think myself the away was possibly "standard" tackle twill. For instance, if we look at the B&W Polo Grounds photo, it seems to lack the shine and very pronounced creases of the mid-late 40's Luckman photos like the now famous auction gamer. I'm not certain that color alone would account for such a dramatic difference in features. Hopefully my customizer can do either :) . Thanks for all the help guys, maybe someday I'll be fortunate enough to jump over here from a collector's standpoint!
