    Resources for Photo-referencing

    Friends and fellow forum members,

Before GameUsedForum and GameUsedUniverse merged, there was a thread on the old GameUsedForum that addressed resources for photo-referencing (websites that provided lots of detailed photos of players, equipment, etc.). Times have changed and there are many good resources that are new; and some of the old resources are no longer available.

The purpose of this thread is to have folks contribute the websites/links that they know of that may be used for photo-referencing. The links may be of a general nature (an entire sport or sports in general), team-specific, or player-specific. Some examples are below. I look forward to seeing your responses. Results of this thread will be used to create a link on GameUsedForum that will provide all of the photo-referencing resources that have been identified ... and the link will be updated as time passes and new websites become available (or are discovered) and old websites become unavailable. This should assist collectors in "doing the necessary homework."

    Examples of general photo-referencing websites:
Discover Getty Images' unrivaled collection of royalty-free images to find the perfect stock photo, vector, or illustration that resonates with your customers.

Examples of team-specific photo-referencing websites (e.g., Atlanta Braves):

Visit ESPN for Atlanta Braves live scores, video highlights, and latest news. Find standings and the full 2024 season schedule.

    Examples of player-specific photo-referencing websites
    Cal Ripken Jr.: http://homepages.nyu.edu/~eam1490/CRipken.html
    Alex Rodriguez: http://www.angelfire.com/sports/ulti...te/photos.html

Hopefully, many people will contribute and this will turn into a great resource for members of GameUsedForum and GameUsedUniverse.

I might be wrong but I do believe there is a website called photobucket.com where people can place personal photos of there own and its open to the public to look it and within that you can do a search for players in sports as people do take photos when they are at games and put them here.

The Uni Watch Blog has a list of amazing links to the kinds of things we're interested in- league sites, team sites, historical sites big and small.
Since they did all the work compiling it, I don't want to steal them, so here's the link to their site.
Uni Watch is a media project that deconstructs the finer points of sports uniforms (and occasionally other topics) in obsessive and excruciating detail.

Re: Resources for Photo-referencing: Corbis question

Can Corbis photos be downloaded without the watermark somehow? Can an average Joe set up an account with Corbis and download? I know with Getty you can not but with wireimage you can as long as you pay a feee ($25 for photos from the last year, not too bad I think). What about Corbis?
          Thanks.

            Number9,

You may want to look into this with Corbis, but I have never seen the photos without the watermark. I would imagine, like most things, it will cost you a few dollars.

If you talk with them and find out, please update us on the forum. Thanks,

              Hi Reid,
Thanks for the response. I will see what I can find out. I know I was able to take some images from Wireimage by buying a $25 subscription that gave access to photos from the last year. I have had no luck with Getty at all but have heard they will sell photos at a HUGE price, several hundred dollars per photo. Have never seen the Corbis site until you posted it today and there's a couple photos there I would like to have. Thanks for the heads up.

              Mike

                Poor Man's Getty...
I often search the eBay "vintage sports memorabilia" category "photo" , "negative", or "slide".

                  Mike,

Glad I could be of help. That is what this site is for ... let us know what you find out from Corbis.

                  - - - - - -

                  Warren,

Some great finds there. I've found some pretty helpful photos on eBay myself and I think that eBay is often forgotten when one is searching for photos.

I often Google a player's or team's name that I'm interested in and add the words "fan site" or the word "fansite" as this will bring up websites that normally don't turn up on the first several pages of Google listings ... and some fansites have great collections of player and team photos (in fact, this is how I found the Ripken and Arod sites I listed earlier).
