Ebay item 270619018242: Card Company Chicanery

This card purports to have part of a Rawlings tag from the Drysdale jersey pictured on the back (if anyone can link it, I would appreciate it). However, the design of the tag on the card is clearly post-1971, this for a guy who retired in 1969, and from a jersey whose tag in the picture is obviously of the 1963-71 variety. Wonder from whose jersey this tag slice ACTUALLY came from...?

There is a somewhat prevelant problem within the card collecting hobby. Unethical people remove the generic jersey swatch and replace it with a rare multicolored patch, mlb logo, etc. The card company may not have included that swatch, it was possibly altered in the secondary market to increase its price on resale.

That said, generally that results in finding a the swapped swatch in a card numbered to 250 or 500. You dont usually see it as much with cards numbered this low. But with the continual drop in prices its only a matter of time before the truly limited number cards started to get altered as well. That said, Leaf/Donruss is very good about labeling cards "prime" ie if they manufactured this it would probably say "authentic game worn jersey - prime".

There is a picture of the jersey on the back of the card itself.

I can't get this low resolution image to blow up, but it would be neat to see what the tag is on the back of the jersey with a high resolution scan. I know they have been swapping swatches on game used jersey cards, but I don't think it would be normal to swap a swatch on a card numbered of only five, anything is possible.

I asked the seller to email me high resolution scans, I'll post them if they do.

IMO Donruss got pretty desperate at the end of their time and it wouldnt surprise me if they faked it to clean out inventory.

Who knows what is actually on most of the swatches. People would be shocked if they knew. For the most part you cant prove it either way unless it is blatant like here.

I don't understand, doesn't Panini own DonRuss? DonRuss is alive and well.

The banner on their web site reads:

Panini America formerly Donruss Trading Card Company.

Donruss did not lose their baseball license until the 2006 season. They produced baseball cards, fully licensed by MLB, through 2005.
