The item referred to above is a photo of Hank Aaron celebrating after he hit his then-record setting 715th home run in Atlanta 4/8/74. (Photo post or link would be most appreciated).

The jersey he wears in the photo (same day as the home run) has a couple of noticeable oddities:

First off, the front 4's don"t match...one has a noticeably thicker blue portion than does the other.

Second, Aaron's jersey has a round collar...not what was used on the 1974 Braves jersey (made by Wilson) but what WAS used on 1972 Sand-Knit gamers.

Is it possible that Hank Aaron made history in a font-mismatched, 2-year-old jersey?

Once someone can post the photo, I'd enjoy hearing your thoughts.

Here's some more pics:

If you look real close, you can see the 'v' neck... the black and white photos wash out the tee-shirt underneath into the jersey and appear to make it look like a round or scoop neck...

You can ee the V some here too:

This is the one in the HoF that is claimed to be THE jersey:

I think the camera flash and the black and white photo and the angle also make a optical illusion where it appears the 4's are different, as the color photos after the fact show the 4's are in fact the same.

Hope this helps -

Chris

I can see the "v" there as well, it is tough to see though.

I am thoroughly confused. The B/W wire photo that Dave initially referred to, looks like the 4's are completely mismatched. This should be noted by ALL "photomatchers".

just curious why this item has no bids. are the tribune's archive photos worth anything?

Not really. Like many things, eBay has made many items easier to find than in the past. A first generation, original, vintage print gets more than a wire photo.

Joel, look all over eBay and at other auction houses, there is a lot of vintage photos coming out of the back rooms of many major sources. It may take years to spread the wealth to where these original press/photo shoot photos regain their value.

I have heard of several newspapers and a trading card company who have released a lot of vintage photos in the past few years.
