I read about the Cap Anson bat that was recently sold and it mentioned the bat had been repaired not for cosmetic reasons (ie. display purposes) but to extend the life of the bat for game purposes. I thought this was interesting. Does anyone know when this practice of repairing bats for game usage was discontinued and give the example. Thanks in advance.

In the book "Big League Batboy," the author gives an account of Lou Brock having one of his favorite bats repaired by a stadium handyman in the late '60s so he could continue using it.
