For years, I've used nothing but standard ballpoints to get signatures on baseballs, but I've been very disappointed, on many occasions, with the results - mainly because the player doesn't bear down sufficiently, and I get a very light, bad-looking autograph as a result.

I use a Signo uni-ball Gelstick 0.7 at work, and I've been toying with the idea of getting some autos on basballs with it and seeing how it looks, whether it "spreads" (as Sharpie sigs often do), etc. Does anyone have experience with gelstick sigs? I seem to recall Joe Garigiola using one at a signing some years ago, and the autograph on that ball still looks good.

In the past I have bought baseball's (OMLB) and actually signed it myself with different pens to see what I like and how it holds up. I suggest you try that especially if you are using something new :)
