1. The color resolution is too dark and the colors are off. (It's not only fake, it's a bad fake.)

2. The fan has been artificially aged. (Laughably bad job of trying to dirty up a modern print job to try to make the item appear older.)

3. The handle is to thick and poorly cut. (Laughably bad job of creating a wooden handle for the fan -- looks as though the criminal didn't even try to credibly duplicate the handle of an authentic c. 1910 Fan for a Fan.)

4. The auction is for private bidders only. (A criminal seller uses this technique so E-Bayers can't warn bidders that they have bid on a fraudulent item.)

5. The seller has been selling the same items over and over again. (Easily accomplished since he is able to print these items for pennies.)

6. The seller uses the magic word of fraud on E-Bay = Estate Sale. (A tactic used to imply the item was "found" under circumstances which would suggest the item is authentic, while also allowing the seller to claim ignorance as to the authenticity of the item.)

7. The item is not drawing credible bids. An authentic Cobb "Fan for a Fan" (even in lesser condition) is worth several thousands of dollars. (When one sells for a hundred dollars or so, it's because the kind of collectors who pay thousands of dollars know that the offered item isn't a bargain -- it's a worthless fraud.)
