Could any member of this forum use an extra $25.00? I am trying to locate a documented game photo (circa 1966-69) showing the style of Cowboys jersey that I have attached to this thread. I have always thought that from 1966 – 69, the Cowboys wore the “TV” numbers on the shoulder and NOT the sleeves of their jerseys. In 1969, the Cowboys wore a NFL 50th Anniversary patch and NOB so 1969 is eliminated. That narrows the search down to 1966 through 1968.

So-far, I have been unable to locate any photo on my own so I figured a forum member can help me out. Since time is money, just post a documented photo onto this thread and the first member to do so will receive a $25.00 reward.

The photo must show, beyond a reasonable doubt that the jersey is from 1966-68 and the "TV" numbers were on the sleeves and NOT the shoulders of their jerseys. If more than one photo is provided, the winner will be chosen according to the time and date listed on the thread.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim:
From my research, it looks as if the Cowboys had the numbers on the shoulders in 1966, 67, and 68, and moved them to the sleeves in 1969. The first picture from the Dallas Morning News website shows Don Meredith from the 1968 NFL Championship game against Cleveland (he's wearing the ROPO cage mask), and it shows shoulder numbers.

The second pictures shows Meredith from 1965 with numbers on shoulders again (he's bare-headed). Note the three stripes on the jerseys. Beginning in 1966, the Cowboys went to two stripes on the sleeves instead of three.

The third image shows Bob Lillly against the the Eagles, and the numbers are now on the sleeves, but the picture is from probably 1970, as the Eagles wore the white helmets beginning in 1969. Also, the Cowboys wore the blue jerseys in Super Bowl V against the Colts, but that was 1970 (season) and 1971 (Super Bowl) and the numbers were on the sleeves.

This website: http://wapedia.mobi/en/Dallas_Cowboys seems to suggest that the Cowboys moved the TV numbers from the shoulders to the sleeves in 1970 (mandated by the NFL?). This lasted until 1973.

Therefore, if my research is correct, the jersey you pictured cannot be any older than 1969, but probably 1970, from the research that suggests the Cowboys moved the TV numbers to the sleeves in 1970.

I hope this helps, although it does not provide a photo match for the years you needed 1966-68.

Jay,

Thanks for the info. We pretty much share the same info. I have attached a scan of a Cowboys/Eagles jerseys from 1969 showing the NFL patch on both jerseys so 1969 can be eliminated leaving just 1966 through 1968.

As for 1970, in 1970, the Cowboys had nameplates on their jerseys - if you look at my original scan, it does NOT appear that there is enough space on the back of the jersey to accommodate a nameplate so 1969 and up can/may be eliminated.

It's been fun trying to gather the information and I appreciate your input.

If you look closely at both photos, it appears that the jerseys have NOB's. With Getty Images, in some cases, the dates stated are not necessarly accurate to the displayed photos.

Thanx,

Jim

As I advised in your previous thread, you'd best steer clear of that jersey. No one will win your bet because it can't be won. Either the seller doesn't know his history or he does and is trying to con you.

Some photos can be misleading, however. Here's a shot of Staubach, Hayes and Alworth from late 1971 showing TV numbers on the shoulders and not the sleeves. The thing is, the Cowboys frequently recycled old jerseys as practice jerseys, and that's what they're doing here.

And here's a 1977 photo of rookie Tony Dorsett wearing a 1970-73 style jersey (probably belonging to Duane Thomas).
