The Colts wore Logo Athletic game jerseys in 1998, Puma in 1999-2000 and Reebok ever since. They last wore Champion in 1992. The Colts equipment guy must have dug out an oldie but a goodie for Manning to wear in 1998 summer and preseason camps.
Can anyone notice something unusual about this photo of Peyton Manning taken before the 1998 season? The Colts wore Logo Athletic game jerseys in 1998, Puma in 1999-2000 and Reebok ever since. i'm not a jersey guy but i doubt the colts equipment manager fitted manning with an old champion jersey during the colts' 1998 camp... from what i can tell the colts wore both champion and wilson practice jerseys during manning's early days with the colts, through 2000/2001 or so, at least manning did...
photo on the left is from 1998 (harrison is wearing a wilson, manning a champion). center photo is from 2000 (manning sporting a wilson). and the photo on the right is a 2001 camp photo of manning sporting a different style champion, with logos on the sleeves (his rookie champion practice shirt didn't have sleeve logos)....
here are 1999 camp shots, wilson and champion garbs:
and a 1998 camp shot of manning sporting wilson pants and (most likely) his champion shirt:

Whatever the reason, I still found it interesting, given the Colts history of suppliers of game jerseys.

i'm still not following i guess - in the title of your post you referred to the tagging on manning's practice jersey as an "oddity" and then followed by saying that the tagging was "unusual" given:
"The Colts wore Logo Athletic game jerseys in 1998, Puma in 1999-2000 and Reebok ever since. They last wore Champion in 1992. The Colts equipment guy must have dug out an oldie but a goodie for Manning to wear in 1998 summer and preseason camps."
but clearly the colts (as well as other nfl teams) wore practice clothing with brands that varied from their game jerseys - so why is this an oddity, unusual or interesting? again, am i missing something?

No...just think you're splitting hairs on what defines "odd" and "unusual".
