Karl Olson, a once promising outfielder in the Red Sox system who turned out to be a back up player during the 1950s, died Christmas Day at age 79.

Olson was heralded as a top prospect as he worked his way up the ladder in Boston's system, appearing in 5 games for the Bosox in 1951. He spent 1952 serving in Korea, and upon return, seemed to lose the potential that he had. He served as a backup flychaser for the Red Sox from 1953-55. He spent all of 1956 and 8 games in 1957 with the Senators, finishing with another 8 appearances with the Tigers in '57.
