Jim,
I just received a 1969-72 Roberto Clemente U1. I was wondering if you could help me narrow it down to an axact year.

The bat is currently 35.6 ounces and 35.75 inches long. Is there any other information that I can give you to help cross reference with the records to get me down to a specific year?
Thanks for all of your help.

Hi Marty,

Here are some links that should answer your question.

Good luck.

Hi Marty--

Jim is on a trip this weekend and I am covering off all questions. Thanks for the links you sent Sammy---I remembered there were some way back when.

During the tears 1969 through 1972, Clemente had over 500 bats shipped to him, with at least 75% being model U1. Here goes;

The length of your bat is 35.75”. During those four years Clemente ordered model U1 bats in lengths of 35 inches, 36 inches, 36.25 inches, and 36.75 inches. Your bat is too long to have been a 35 inch order, but is within the acceptable variance (+ ¼”) for it to be considered a 36 inch bat. Based on the length of your bat, 36 inches, orders of 36 inch model U1 bats were shipped to Clemente in each of those four years, so no help there in trying to further define the period of manufacture.

The weight of your bat is 35.6 ounces. Knowing that, due to storage conditions over the past 30 to 35 years the bat may lose or gain weight of at least several ounces, it is clear that weight is generally an unreliable measurement . However, in this case Clemente was shipped model U1 bats of 36 inches in the following weights: 36 oz., 37 oz., 38 oz., and 39 oz. His orders of U1 bats 36 inches / 36 ounces were shipped on 12/26/69 (4 bats), 7/30/71 (6 bats 36/37 oz0, 3/3/72 (5 bats), and 4/6/72 92 bats). Thus, there does not appear to be any help there. If the bat is assumed to have been a 36 ouince bat that lost a half an ounce, you might be able to eliminate 19770 as a possibility. The bat could have just as easily been 37 ounces at the time of manufacture, a weight that was shipped in each of those years.

Most Clemente bats of the period were wide grain with weights marked in pencil on the knob. The finish was usually a Regular, or Natural finish. Some bats with Flame Treated/Burned finish were shipped in early 1972 however.

Overall, there are not enough unique characteristics in model, length, weight, or finish to reasonably conclude the date of manufacture with more specificity within this four year period of the subject bat. If the bat is an obvious deep Flame Treated/Burned finish, a suggection of manufacture in early 1972 may be reasonable, but I would hesitate to specifically authenticate the bat to that year of manufacture.

I hope this provided an overview of the bat, even though it did not successfully narrow down the time frame you were looking for.Additional information on Clemente’s orders throughout his career can be found on his Player bat chart in the Game Used Library section of Game Used Universe.

Good Luck.
