View Full Version : Your Rarest bat

I just sold a bat I really didn't want to sell, but I consoled myself by saying that I could get another one down the road... Got me thinking, what bat do I have that I would never be able to replace...

What is my rarest bat??

If your collection was destroyed, what bat is irreplaceable?

And I'm not talking about a Pujols, or Tony Gwynn Rookie... I mean something that you are pretty sure you have the only one in existance?

What is your rarest bat?

Mine is my 1934 Woodley Abernathy bat

The bat is from 1934-35 when Abernathy played for the Baltimore Orioles in the International League... He was the Ineternational League HR King in 1934 and 1936

Pretty sure this bat could never be replaced

Although there may be a few floating around, I bought a Carlos Ruiz 2009 World Series bat this year at Citizen's Bank Park -- MLB hologram does not show up in database.

Probably this non-contract BLOCK letter H&B bat (bottom) of Cal Ripken Sr. which dates to the 1950-1960 labeling period is my rarest....I got it from a guy who worked with Cal Sr. during the winter months back during that time period...

My rarest bat would have to be my 1974 Bill Buckner World Series bat. H&B experimented with a larger center label and larger Powerized for the series to help advertise the brand. MLB outlawed the larger labels after the series. Only 2 bats were made for Buckner and I'd like to see another 74 WS bat to compare the labels.

Although this is not the most expensive bat in my collection-I doubt that there are many of these out there so I would consider it probably my rarest. A 1944-48 Lou Gehrig pro model bat signed at a ball game by Cal Ripken.

This is such a beautiful bat in my opinion. As BMH tells it, Manny wanted to fool around with an I13 for the first time in many years, so he had a couple reps drive out to Cincy in Aug '09 and give Manny what he wanted. He dressed it up, took a couple hacks in BP, and said it was too end heavy. Bat pops out of circulation and into the hands of Manny's posse who later make a deal with Andrew Lang using my ATM card at Nats Park.

I love the larger M9 sticker, the 125th anniversary stamp, and the fact that it says "LOS ANGELES DODGERS" under Manny's name. The two tone gives it a little extra pop and highlights the fresh pine tar. To my knowledge, there hasn't yet been another one of these to surface.

My infamous Randy Johnson Diamondbacks World Series bat is a rarity, for sure, but I think you'd actually be less likely to come across another one of these.

Most RJ and Astros collectors I talk with seem unaware that he even bothered to have bats made up in the brief time he was in Houston, and I've never seen or heard of another one. He brought this one to ST with the DBacks in '99.

Four months ago MEARS auctioned a GU Ozzie Smith bat that they termed "one of the earliest known to exist." http://www.mearsonlineauctions.com/LotDetail.aspx?lotid=17512

Well, not quite. Here is almost certainly THE earliest Ozzie GU bat in the hobby. This bat is from his second professional order, shipped on 3/21/1978. (The only documented order prior to that is dated 11/3/1977 -- two model U1 bats that were typically made up when a player signed his first endorsement contract.) I obtained this bat (and signature) in person while interviewing Ozzie at the Old Ox restaurant in San Diego early in Ozzie's 1978 rookie season. This cupped end model C271 was one of an order of 12 bats, and his only order matching those specs during the 1977-79 label period. A slight handle crack, rack marks, hit marks, and a small area of deadwood. Pretty much an impossible bat to replace.

Austin Jackson's First MLB Bat. He used it for his first 15 MLB at bats and used it to record his first career hit(a double). He also used it to record his first career single, triple and RBI. He got his first 5 hits in total with this bat. I think it's rare, you can only have one "First".

I had to think really hard on this one and it has to be this Albert Pujols 2002 Old Hickory bat with shaved handle, photo matched to a Donruss baseball card and getty image.

Only two of these two-tone bats were shipped to Albert in 2002 as confirmed by an Old Hickory rep. I have yet to see the other two-tone bat surface and I have never seen any Old Hickory Pujols bats with the same color combo.

Alright, I have some good stuff in my collection, but nothing really "rare". Ive always just tried to acquire a gamer from my favorite players. This bat though is pretty cool.

My vladimir guerrero photomatched Home Run bat. He hit a grandslam off Zach Greinke with this. The reason I like it is because he used the bat for nearly a month back in 2007. It was one of the easiest photo matches ever due to the distinct marks, as well as, the donut ring wearing away at the bat.

For signed items I included my Ichiro signed 16X20. He signed it for me in person at the 2006 all star game and was so funny. I was so excited to meet him and have him sign it... he says to me. "Is this for you?" I tell him "Yes Yes Yes", all excited because I knew I was finally going to get a nice item from him. He takes the box with my 16X20 and sets it on the ground, and grabs someone elses item and signs it. My jaw drops, and im so confused.... he then laughs and goes, "Im just messing with you man.".... picks it up and signs it, and sure enough its framed today. Hes been one of my favorite players ever since, such a cool guy, and one of the best ever.

I have a 34" Gary Carter K55 game used bat from 1973 his actual rookie year. Vince Malta informed me of the following orders in 73.

4-25-73 34" 33 ounces 3 bats
5-1-73 34" 33 ounces 8 bats
5-14-73 34" 34 ounces 2 bats

This was the only year Carter ordered 34" inch bats as subsequent bat orders were 35" (until the end of his career when he ordered 34" C243 while with the Expos). I put it next to a 76 Carter for comparison purposes.

I've not seen another 34" Carter 73 bat anywhere else.

Since Bert said Pujols rookie bats don't make the cut :p I'd have to go with my 2005 signed and inscribed bat. The bat itself is not the rarity (although it does have the nicest Pujols signature I have seen on a bat), but the inscription makes it a one of a kind. If you consider how difficult it must be to write on a bat, I can't imagine we're going to see a bunch of these anytime soon...frankly, I'm amazed Albert took the time to do it even once.

Ty Cobb Hanna Batrite- One of a kind center brand with his model designation instead of "Batrite" located inside the bat logo.

Hack Wilson Hanna Batrite- These bats with the player name only on the barrel are pretty rare, and so are Hack Wilson bats in general. I like the fact that it is made from hickory instead of ash. Has his trademark thin handle with a large knob. Thanks to Tim for this pickup

Im sure there are several Gene Mauch player bats out there, but there aren't many of these (unless they made All Star bats for the coaches, that is.)

Mauch had a 26 year managerial career and never made it to the World Series, so there are no Mauch WS bats in existence, and there shouldn't be any All Star Mauch bats either, since the AS teams are managed by the previous season's pennant winners. However, in 1964 Johnny Keane won the NL pennant for the Cards, then went to the Yankees in the A.L. in 1965. Mauch had finished 2nd in 1964, so he was named to manage the 1965 All Star game, his only one as manager. And he won the game, too.

You've got that right. Well, it was a long time ago - 1999 - that Randy signed this for one of the DBacks bat boys. Most people seem to mellow with age - the Unit seems to be doing...whatever the opposite of mellowing is.

It's not really an epic story. About 40 years ago, my grandfather died and I was helping to clean out his basement. There was an old barrel with some bats in it, and one was especially interesting because it was big and completely covered in tar. Using a penknife I carefully uncovered the name on the bat but didn't recognize it. My grandmother said that I could have the bats, so I took them home. I eventually wrote to Hillerich and Bradsby to ask about the Felsch bat. I remember giving a very thorough description in my letter. I recall saying that the player's name was not written out but seemed to be printed on the barrel. Jack McGrath wrote back saying that the bat was ordered for Felsch's personal use and that he "no doubt used it." The bat played a big role in my early interest in pre-war baseball.

I'm glad that you like it. I think that the 40+ years the bat spent covered in tar helped to give the wood a nice look. I, too, really like the Clemente and Cobb bats. Clemente was my favorite player, and the Momen bat is fantastic. And the Hanna Batrite Cobb is also amazing--- I wonder what the length and weight are. I wish I had one of those.

As for the number of Felsch bats in the hobby, I can't say. When I was buying some vintage bats back in the early 1990's, the dealer I was working with once said that he heard of someone else who had one. But I wasn't sure if he was being serious. I know that there are a couple of Weavers and Gandils in the hobby and that there are few more Jacksons out there, but they are all very tough bats.

Well, that sounds a lot more plausible than the 32 1/2 oz. 34" Spalding bat with "Meyers" in block letters that was auctioned a few years ago.

Yeah, I've seen that listing and thought the same thing. Read Meyers account of the bats he used in The Glory of Their Times.

treant985 Earliest known SAM Bat (made in Jan 1997 before the company even formed). I got it from a family that grew up with Sam Holman (owner of SAM bats) in South Dakota and bought the bat from Sam's sister. Not exactly like finding a Pete Browning LVS, but still a famous bat company.

That Sam is pretty cool

That Sam is pretty cool

It's definitely a rough bat. The barrel and knob are very square, and it's very long and skinny.

Sam told me that he made a little league prototype that's the true original, but he lost it. So this one really could be the oldest one out there.

Any more unusual bats out there?

I think it would be safe to call this bat "unusual". Perhaps BMH could shed some light on what it is, exactly, unless someone else knows.

As you can see, it's got six small holes drilled into the handle, and filled with either a lighter wood or cork - it's hard to tell.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc02b3127ccefc3a7045e9a900000030O02EbsmzVu0ZA9 vPhw/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

The holes are spaced anywhere from a little over 2" to almost 4" apart.

I think it was used by Ansman in DBacks ST in 2004. I bought it years ago at the Team Shop.

This bat has been in my family since before I was born. Found it on a recent trip to the Dominican Republic. My grandmother had it for protection (haha). We got Albert to sign it and I'm thinkin about passing it around so the rest of the family who used it so they can sign it as well. What do you guys think??

Its a Louisville Slugger H&B 125LL. Its a little league bat and has someones name in cursive. The only letters I can make out are onake? marelli? I not sure of the name... I did forget to mention that this was our family bat back in the D.R. Albert and a few of my uncles used to praise this thing. In the Dominican Republic having a bat like this was something special in those days and still (in some parts) today.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention...If you ever watch the Dove commercial featuring Albert.. when Albert is flexing his muscles as a young boy...I'm right next to him (haha). My half second of fame... Sorry about the scan, out of town and forgot my camera...

I'd say my 1986 game issue dawson bat cooper model, it was his last year as an expos player and not sure how many were ever made. Has his writting on knob but never seen a pic of him using cooper. Im assuming hard to find bat.

A few others--- A Don Sutton and Luis Aparicio game used bats.

The Sutton is a 71-72 model G105. Though Sutton bats aren't super duper rare, finding his bats pre-80's is somewhat rare in my opinion.

The Aparacio is from his very first year in pro baseball, in 1954. He only ordered 9 bats that year and just 3 in this model- Y4. The only block lettered Aparicio bat I've ever seen.

Mine are all from newer players, so nowhere near as rare or amazing as ones I have seen on here.

Still, I have a couple nice ones:

Torii Hunter GU bat he signed for me at Twinsfest.

Brian Dozier unbroken bat from his rookie year he signed; it came from his personal collection.

Yoenis Cesepedes A's GU bat from his All Star season in Oakland, before he was traded.

Tough call. I only have three bats, and each is rare.

This one is from 1911-14, and was used by a semi-pro catcher in Iowa against various semi-pro Negro teams, including (probably, but no positive i.d.) the Buxton Wonders, Kansas City Giants and Chicago Giants. I haven't researched the player's team enough - I'm sure there are other teams of importance that he used it against. As far as I can tell, it's the earliest bat used in a game involving Negro teams.

I wouldn't necessarily consider it rare since I'm sure there are others out there somewhere but my Curt Motton '73-74 Orioles bat has proven to be a tough one. I won this on eBay awhile back and in my almost 10 years of collecting I have never seen another one of his bats before or after anywhere.
