Any thoughts on this jersey? It looks really dirty, but the signature looks good. Tagging correct? What does the forum think?
Scott
If this is legit, boy, what a great piece!

Please see my post from yesterday regarding another Brett jersey on Ebay. This has the same type/style of year tagging that is not standard "Swiss Embroidery" used by Wilson during this era.

It's interesting to note that this jersey ended at over $3,000 and the underbidder I believe was Troy at MEARS....

Collect GU Dave-
Not a shocker at all. Hunt auctions had a similar Brett with a MEARS LOA that was pulled after it was pointed out that the embroidery was the same incorrect style with a dash between the year and set. Based on MEARS writing a LOA on the bogus Hunt auctions jersey, are you really shocked that Troy from MEARS bid on this?

Hi Howard - just trying to learn a little here....what are the specific things that are wrong with the Brett jersey? Thanks in advance - Jim

Jim-
The 1 in 81 is completely wrong for Wilson style embroidery. It should not have the tail on top or bottom, just a vertical line.

You will often see this type of embroidery on 1981 Phillies jerseys, which is a dead giveaway that it's bad. Here is a prime example of a bad 1981 Phillies Bowa with similar tagging for the 1: http://www.eddolan.com/bowa_1981-r.htm

Howard - as an add on to my last post - someone who knows jerseys from this era should ask Troy the question - on the MEARS site - of why he would bid $3,000 on this item ........maybe he knows something that we don't?? Jim

Jim-
Send an email to Troy with your concerns via MEARS-the response should be interesting.

Just wondering, if that is Troy's ID, we should also ask him why he is buying old political memorabilia and old magazines, old books and old programs.

Oh yeah, also, why he is buying an old Planet of the Apes Walker:

It is funny, you bid with any other auction house and your bids are private, on eBay people can see what other people are bidding on, and they you can question a guy for spending his money. People wonder why I make so many auctions private.

i agree with howard in his observation that the font used in the embroidery, specifically the 1, is odd. wilson used this style of embroidery on their mlb jerseys during the 70s and early-mid 80s. during the late 80s, they switched to a cleaner, more "professional looking" font that i think came about as a result of technical advances in stitching.
here are some examples of swiss embroidery used by various teams throughout the 80s:

i'd like to add though that in looking at some 1990 A's jerseys, i've noticed two distinctly different styles of embroidery on their strip tags:

i've no knowledge or insight as to why these differences exist. anyone else ever see 2 different font styles used on tagging during the same year from the same manufacturer? (either embroidered or computer printed). a few weeks ago, i think someone posted an image of a modern jersey with a computer-printed strip tag and i noticed that it was in a different font than i'd seen for the team for that year. not sure if it was legit or not.

Like Troy, I collect many other things besides jerseys. In the early 90s, I re-stocked my shelves with toys from my childhood, including action figures from "The Six Million Dollar Man" series. I also have a passion for the Bionic Bigfoot. I dig Mego Planet of the Apes, Shindana J.J. Walker and Redd Foxx dolls. I have a Bionic Man with never-rolled arm skin. No, I don't play with the dolls, they are MIB (mint in box). Still looking for a FemBot.

Good one, Rudy. I guess I set myself up for that one. For the record, I have a wife (a real-life grown woman).
