All,

The jersey is being presented as a 1973 Willie Mays game-worn Mets jersey. Interestingly enough, the Mets did not begin wearing the blue batting practice jersey until 1981. Furthermore, they did not begin to wear the triple stripe (orange, white, orange) on the edge of the sleeves until 1982-1983. If the jersey is legitimate, it is a 1980s style (either 82-83) from Mays, perhaps worn as a coach? Anyone know if the sizing is correct (44)?
I am guessing the following --
1. The jersey is being sold through an auction house, and the due diligence was not done. The word of the consigner was taken and no further research was done.
2. The fact that Mays played for the Mets in the early 70s was the basis for the year on the jersey and nothing more. It was assumed to be a jersey worn by Mays from when he played.
But what doesn't sit well with me is that it comes with a Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Autnentication -- wouldn't James Spence know this type of information??? How could they vouch for this jersey as a 1973??
I have written to the auction house...
