View Full Version : Help Finding a Photo: 1990 Tino Martinez Mariners

Was looking for a little help. I'm looking for a photo from 1990 showing Tino Martinez with just "Martinez" on the back of his jersey and not "T. Martinez" that was used later on.

Or, an Edgar Martinez photo of the back of his jersey from 1990 might show they only used last name that year.

I know this doesn't answer, but all I could find on Getty Images was Edgar Martinez with no first initial in 1989, and with the first initial in 1991....

It makes sense that there wouldn't be a first initial since he made his debut late in season on August 20, 1990. Just looking for some pics that show that.

Edgar played almost a full season in 1990. Tino played only 24 games. Games in which Edgar played. Should the back not read T Martinez ?

At the start of 90 Edgar would just have "Martinez" on his back. When Tino was called up at the end of the season in August, I don't know if they would put the "T" or not on Tinos. Maybe they left them both as "Martinez" and the next season, they went to first initial and last name for both of them? I'm really not sure, just looking for more info. All the Tino pics I could find from 1990 don't show the back, or they don't show the first part of nameplate.

I did see a 1990 Tino at the Mariners team shop along with a couple others all had T. Martinez except the 1990 home team issued one.

Just found and bought this photo of Tino from 1990.

It looks like that's the start of an "M" and not a "T"

Let me know what you think.

Looks like it could be a match. The slide is dated August 31st yet Tino did not play in the Aug 31st game though.

You are correct. It appears that was in a newspaper on that date. The pic and caption appears to be showing the new first baseman rather than tied to a specific game highlight or play.

Looks like you found a possible match, that is clearly an "M". The nameplate touches the seam and there looks to be a thread/mark on the bottom part of the "S" on the front, is that thread sticking out on the bottom part of the nameplate on your jersey?

My jersey does have that thread sticking out on the bottom. It looks very good to me.

No worries man, just glad to see that a Tino fan got one at cost. I checked a bunch of Mariners cards last night and couldn't find an example so that AP photo is a nice find.
