Ok so we know the NFL wanted to change the captains patch for players who were captains for longer then 4 years, hence the 4 stars that would be shaded gold. Well captains who play a role in being a captain longer then 4 years will feature a GOLD C logo rather then the ordinary white C from preveous years. So for some one like Drew Brees there are 4 stars shaded gold and the Captain C in middle of patch is shaded Gold aswell.

Thoughts?

They should just use numbers instead of stars....what happens when a guys been captain for 7 years or something like that. Be nice if they just put a "C" with the number of years in the center of the C.....just a thought.

yeah I saw, def like the white C much better. Any word on why the Packers aren't wearing theres? Did they find themselves to classy to wear it this season and copy the Jets and those teams that don't participate in Captains shining!

haha I think teams that don't wear them are boring. I love the captains patch.

Esp because all teams on sunday will be wearing red white blue captain patches for 9/11 : ) going to be cool to see some of those gamers in the pick up threads. Going to be rarer then the breast cancer patch gamers becasue with BC it happens for a whole month every year. With 9/11 anny its once every 10 years. And they will all hit market being proceeds will go to 9/11 victims, memorials, and familys.

P.S off topic but did anyone see how stupid sean payton was to call that goal line run when it didn't work all night! Not once all night! And they run it with no time left on clock lmao! What happened to the bootleg QB roll out they used to run and score on every play in 09? Guess they don't run it anymore. Shame on the saints and that goal line run call. Pathetic play call

What is the reason/logic behind changing a captain's patch to gold after four years, and why is four years the cutoff?

I don't really even see the need to indicate how many years someone was a captain. It's not like they do it in hockey.

because like everything in the NFL its a macho man type thing. Players I guess look at it as a respect thing too. They could have done much better.

I believe when they started it they had only 4 stars and didn't know what to do about the 5th one so this year they put them all gold.

Why did I not know that OLine can wear a number in the 50's?

I think they're designated to wear 50-79, correct? But you're right you don't see too many OL wearing numbers in the 50s.

Eugene Amano for the Titans wears 54, FWIW.

The Packers designate captains for each game. They change week to week.
During the playoffs, they team votes on the captains and they receive the patches for the game.

Most NFL Careers are not too long, and by the time some guys become captiains it is 2-3 years down the road. However, I think it will be interesting when some well liked 27 year old punter or longsnapper becomes captain and sticks with the team for 10 years+

But the current aptch, begs the question, what happens to the patches next year for 6-year captains? I don't like the captains patches at all and if they had to do it, have a better game plan and add another row of 4 stars, to it to begin with. 8-years I think would cover around 70-85%% of all players deemed captain's careers, or at least careers with 1 team.
