Guys,
I have 2 1986 Astros jerseys and have questions on both of them I hope an expert could help with.
Jersey #1:
Style - Home Rainbow Sleeve jersey
Manufacturer - Goodman & Sons
Player/Coach - Gene Tenace #18
Theory: The jersey was worn in 1986 because out of the 3 years in which Goodman & Sons made this style jersey for the team (1984-1986), Tenace was only with them in 1986.
Problem: Missing sleeve patch with no evidence that one was removed.
Here are my thoughts --
a) It was never Tenace's jersey in the first place. As Goodman jerseys never had year tags, the jersey could as well be from 1984 or 1985, and was just restored with the wrong name. #18 in 1984 and 1985 for the Astros was outfielder Tim Tolman. The jersey is a size "43" and Tolman was 6'0", 195 lbs...would that match?
b) It was Tenace's jersey from 1986, but not every jersey had a patch. I would say this is a less likely scenario.
c) There was a patch and it was removed meticulously. I don't have the light to be able to validate this one, but again, not very likely.
d) The jersey is from later than 1986? As the Astros were a fairly cheap organization in the 1980s, they sometimes had leftovers being worn on field in following years (i.e. Sand Knit stopped making their jerseys in 1983, but some Sand Knit jerseys were worn in 1984 at the same time as the Goodmans).
Jersey #2:
Style - Road Rainbow Sleeve jersey
Manufacturer - Rawlings
Player/Coach - Terry Puhl #21
This one has a "Set 2 1986" flag tag. Problem is that Rawlings is not the known manufacturer of this style jersey.
Theory #1: jersey is a salesman's sample (and is how it was sold to me). Ultimately the Astros went with Rawlings product in 1987.
Theory #2: jersey is part of an early set made by Rawlings for the team and used in the 1986 playoffs.
Any help with the above items would be greatly appreciated.
Nick
