Some genius converted a Spalding trophy into a bank. When he decided to cash out, he cracked the back of the base to get at the $3.27 that was inside.
Don't you love how sellers minimize damage by saying things like "There is a hole at the bottom of the bank but does not affect appearance"? Uhh...Unless of course...you look at it!?!?! It's like when people sell vintage cards and state "it's near mint except for the acid burn, bullet holes, and where my 2 year old drew a mustache with a green crayon".

Yeah, that was pretty stupid, but it's still going to go for a lot of $$$$. Look at what this Spalding trophy sold for which was completely missing the figural part of it.

That spalding with the missing figural went for alot at $360 - but with the figural it goes for A LOT MORE!!:)

I saw that auction, and based on the look of the top believe it was the catcher (my favorite). At $360, its' still a cool looking Spalding ball. Have it re-silvered and it would be a nice item.

It probably was the Catcher. One sold in Lelands for $7000.

Leland's says that Trophy was made between 1915-1920, but based on the look of the mask wouldn't you put this trophy closer to 1930?

Humm..I think you may be right. I think I recall that this style of mask was invented by an umpire around 1920. Here is a pic from a Reach 1926 catalog with the exact same mask. I don't have any examples earlier than this, but I don't think this style of mask was around in 1915.
