Who has $1 million I can borrow. The famous ball hit by mookie Wilson in game 6 of the 86 series that went between bill buckners legs is being auctioned on ebay starting on Oct 15. The starting price is a bit out of my range but how amazing would it be to own it. The article for the auction is here.

I don't mean to stir the pot here but anyone who has collected used balls or pucks older than roughly 5 seasons ago knows how practically impossible authenticating these balls are. How do you KNOW it's the actual ball? Ask Classics Auctions about a Wayne Gretzky puck 1851. There are 3 that people SWEAR are the REAL one!

While I don't like the Mets, I was a Mets fan in 1986 (Dad's fault) The fact is, this baseball was owned by Charlie Sheen, a man above reproach when it comes to integrity......

It's worth apparently $1 million dollars. If people will lie about $100 jerseys being worn, faking this ball is not only more likely than a far stretch but dare I say, a logical possibility?

Do any Mets fans know if the Mets are displaying or have ever displayed the ball at Shea or their new exhibition at CitiField? If so, is it in fact this one? How about that jersey from the Series they displayed, owned by the player and claimed by him to be the one he wore. Ummm no, it wasn't.... Not the teams fault but if a player will fib and claim he did wear it, what says someone else didn't lie about this ball?

I'm sorry if I sound cynical. Actually, no, I'm not. Anyone visiting this site can do a quick search for items what are proported to be one thing and later proven not to be. Barry Halper? The Bo Jackson All Star Bat? MEARS had a couple of items which were flambayed. Fact is, this ball should come with multiple photo and video matches otherwise, it's just an 86 WS ball that someone SAYS is the most important baseball in Mets History.

In this case, I think that the provenance is strong and verifiable:

The Mets Hall of Fame and Museum at CitiField has been opened now for 2 seasons, and this ball was displayed for the entire first season. It was on loan from Seth Swirsky (Unfortunately, after the 1st season, he requested the ball back). There is no doubt in my mind that this is the ball.

I am not saying Seth is lying. Nor am I saying the Mets made a switcheroo when they owned it. I believe this is the ball handed to Mookie to sign in 1986, the one that was passed around and kissed and all that.

But history has a way of building on the wrong item. Two people owned this ball prior to Mookie's signature and the party in the clubhouse. Arthur Richman who handed it to Mookie with the one little x on it (simply replicated) and the Umpire who picked it up and gave it to Arthur, Ed Montague.

Ask a Chicago Blackhawks fan where the puck scored in OT that won them the Cup is. This was 2010, the age of everything in HD photographs. A line judge swears it's never been in his hand....whoops! http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=110421/missingpuck

Ask someone how $50k was spent on THE 1851 point Gretzky's goal puck when there are 3 people with legit stories based on proving a goal judge admitting he lied about at least one of them being "the real one" and photos that don't seem to back him up on any: http://www.gameworn.net/cgi-bin/GW/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=009401

How about MLB putting invisible ink on Jeter's 3000's hit, Bonds HRs, Sosa HRs, McGwire HRs. It's not because people are honest and no one would lie. Even in 1986, people knew the value of this ball and 2 people had the chance to switch or modify it. Above you see proof of people in a similar situation doing just that.

The fact remains, barring photographic or video proof this is A baseball used in 1986 WS was handed to Mookie who was told third hand that it's the one he hit. The legend and proof of it's authenticity and provenance is built seemingly completely SINCE Wilson signed it.

Sure it's just as likely to be the ball and for a shining moment in 1986, 3 people showed integrity, did the right thing and were honest.

Just remember, Barry Halper had an impeccable reputation until he stocked the Baseball HOF with knockoffs.
