GUF readers,

Please see the following auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170031592632

When I saw this auction come up, I immediately bid the minimum amount on it. Soon after I bid on it, I received the following email from an eBay user:

hi,
you are bidding on item 170031592632. i just sold this jersey monday to the guy selling it now. he has not yet gotten it as i just shipped today. the jersey is not game used. i sold it as an authentic jersey because the use and tagging can not be aiuthenticated. here is the original listing: 140030689025
good luck!

Here is the link to the original auction that is referenced:

I had some interest in this jersey, but was curious about the tag as it looks pink (and I couldn't tell from the scans if it is really pink or just discolored a bit), so I was careful to only bid the minimum ($99.99) so that I would not meet the reserve. I thought I would share this information with GUF readers.

Admittedly, I did not contact the current seller with this information as I did not want the current seller to try to get the original seller in trouble with eBay. So, Eric, if you must edit this, then please feel free and I apologize in advance.

hello reid,

to the best of my knowledge, it appears that the russell manufacturer tag on this clemens jersey was first used in 1996. it seems odd that it's affixed to a 1995 year tag.
the main difference between a 1993-95 vs a 1996-1999 russell tag is that the former has 4 lines of washing instructions while the latter has 5.

Here is the most recent email from the original seller:

hi,
the tag is actually more of a sandy color. i sold it for a friend and even told the guy that the use and tagging could not be authenticated!!! we sold it as an authentic jersey--even listed it as fan apparel and souvenirs!!! my friend had worn it until he got too bbig for it and had no room to frame it to display. he is using my pictures! the guy told me it was a gift for his sick father, so i ended the first listing so he could buy it now--he was going out of town, and now he pulls this crap!! glad you will not get something that the jersey is not!!

Rudy,
I believe you may be correct about the tagging. I have a '95 Thome World Series jersey. It has the same identical tagging as the Mattingly. With the exception of the name on the year tag. Roger

Rudy,

Thanks, as always, for your helpful information.

Also, I wanted to update GUF readers. The seller has ended the auction and relisted it as a private auction:

This should not surprise any of us.

eBay used to accept emails so situations like this can be brought to their attention, now they have a system where you have to go to a part of the web site and tell them questionable item numbers without being able to elaborate.

yay! I got the listing removed!!

ok, so first I e-mailed him and asked him why he's reselling it as game used. He didn't respond so then I told him that if he didn't end the listing I would report him, he didn't respond again, then, finally I reported him and a day later and e-mailed me and apologized and told me that the auction will be removed, which it was.
