Chopped Up Bagwell Bat: Was It Game Used in the First Place?

I thought I would share this listing with forum members. I know one of these has been posted before, but this chopped up Bagwell bat left me shaking my head.

I am not a bat expert, but what are those black circles all over the bat? I think I've seen similar marks on a bat once before, but still, I don't know what kind of game use (or contrived use) would leave these kinds of markings on lumber. Thoughts?

They look almost like golfballs. Maybe he was trying to hit balls that are smaller than a baseball, to help hone his swing.
