I finally photomatched a bat that I got a few weeks ago. Photomatched to a Homerun against the Red Sox on 9/25/11 and used all the way until his last at bat in the ALDS against the Tigers. Other photomatch is the triple he hit in the playoffs (I think it was game 2). Steiner authenticated LVS with a ton of use and an absolute ridiculous amount of tar. Funny thing is the bat has a born on date of 5/4/11. Pretty exciting.

I know there was a knob dated October 2009 bat that he used in his last regular season at-bat in 2011 at Tampa as it was sold by Steiner and authenticated by MLB to that at-bat so he was using some oddly dated bats at the end of 2011.

Thanks guys. Carmelo and I were talking last week about how common it was to see a player use a bat much later in the season than the born on date and how common it was. I guess this proves that it doesn't matter when it was made.....

With that amount of pine tar on it and the massive use it's not surprising it was born in May! Nice bat. If he comes back it'll be the last "Yankee" Posada bat at least.

According to MLBtraderumors.com, Jorge will announce his retirement in the next two weeks. It looks like this bat is indeed the final one he EVER used as a major league baseball player. Pretty exciting piece to have in my collection!

The bat was amazing even before this rumor was reported, items like this make the gu hunt even more special. Great bat in the career of a yankee great.

Seeing the pine tar on the bat reminds me of the George Brett fiasco. What was the rule on that one? I thought the tar could not extend a certain number of inches up from the knob? Wouldn't this bat be illegal or did they change the rule?

I'm not a fan of unsigned bats by any means.....BUT, this bat looks amazing with all that tar and use. That said, it being his last bat or last Yankee bat is just an added bonus, great bat.

Thanks guys. This is definitely one of those bats that has a ton of eye appeal and character. I have a lot of cool stuff and this is the one that people point to and ask questions about the most. I decided to change my collection from quantity to quality. This is definitely in the category of quality! Thanks again for the kind words!

OnlyAlbert,

The rule is 18 inches up the bat (of the width of the plate for a quick check) and it is still in effect but I believe its a case of the umpire won't take it upon himself to police the rule so the manager of the opposing team would have to make a complaint and since in all likelihood several of his own guys are using bats with illegal pine tar nobody will ever make the compliant.

LOL. It is really globbed on there. Here are two screen shots from his last at bat in game 5 of the ALDS this past year. Perfect match. Bittersweet hearing that he is retiring but an awesome piece of history in my collection....

Thank you all for the kind words. I am by no means a photoshop expert but here it is right before he grounded out in the 8th inning of game 5. Best picture I could come up with.

Steve and Matt... If I am ever going to sell it, I will let you know.

what a great piece to be the centerpiece of a yankee fan collection. your story should show that there are some hidden gems out there to be had if you are willing to put in some research and happen to think about the possible historical significance (where from the teams or players perspective) that a piece may have. how many players would love to have their last MLB bat? i speculate many. how many yankee collectors would love to have a players final bat? every one them including me.

Thanks Joel. I can appreciate what you are saying. It took hours of sifting through photos to come up with it. Especially since the born on date was in May. I have always been a huge Yankee fan and a big Jorge fan. Like you said, it is quickly becoming one of the centerpieces to my collection. Not only is it absolutely hammered with use and has a ridiculous amount of tar, but the historical meaning behind it makes it all more special.

Jay,

That is just a great looking Posada bat that now has a cool historical aspect to it as well.

Nice job on finding that photo match.

I just checked and it looks as tho this is the bat Posada was using for his last regular season hit (a single) , last regular season homerun, and last time in the regular season he scored (on that hr) and drove in a run (drove in ARod as well on that hr).

Thanks for taking the time to look Joel.... That is awesome. One of the photomatches I posted orignally was off the homerun against the Red Sox. I didn't realize that he had his last regular season hit with it as well!

Got this bat back a few weeks ago from JT. He did an amazing job following through with the photo matches and authenticating the bat as the last bat that Posada ever used and documenting its use throughout the ALDS from last year. Quickly growing as one of my favorites in my collection!

Um amazing bat, truley amazing. As I am a big Posada fan. But now im confused. You have the Steiner LOA & MLB Authenticated.

And you had JT Authenticate it for you????

Did I miss something?

jsr418
10-04-2012, 03:10 PM
There is no mlb authentication. Just Steiner. I photo matched it originally to the last bat he ever used and had JT authenticate it is such. Thanks for the kind words!

Hopefully Posada don't pull a Andy Pettitte and come out of retirement after 1 year off.

Ok even still you got the LOA that it came from the Yankees and have your own photomatched proof of the games it was used in. Still don't see a reason why you would need someone else to tell you that??

Hopefully Posada don't pull a Andy Pettitte and come out of retirement after 1 year off.

I dont think he would but then again you never know with athletes today. But he had options to go to other teams after the Yankees and decided to turn them down.

Unless he was to come back as a Yankee or if another team offered him some serious $$$ that would be the only reason he would come out of retirement and I do not see either opportunity being offered to him any time soon.

Where I would like to see things go hopefully he would be considered to be molded into a coach / manager. He has the intensity. I could see him being the next Pinellia lol:p

Perfect example of a game used Posada bat.

I'm curious if others find the "last bat" compelling. In my opinion the fact the bat was used during the ALDS is a much more significant attribute.

ALDS's come and go, but the last bat used from one of the rgeatest Yankee catchers / All time catchers is a 1 of 1

Theres plenty of ALDS bats out there in comparison to a last at bat which is just one and to add to it this bat was not only used for his last hit but his last home run, his last rbi, his last strikeout. Not to mention he is one of the core four, its an ending of an era.

Its like the perfect trifecta

Under most circumstances, I would agree that Steiner loa and photo match is more than sufficient. As you said, I agree that the bat is a 1 of 1 from one of the most beloved Yankees from the past 20 years. With the history of the bat, the amount of use, and the fact it is untracked, I figured this one warranted JT's stamp of approval.
