Help Date A Catcher's Mask

I know that a lot of you guys have old sporting goods catalogs and I was wondering if anyone could help me date this Reach Catcher's mask. The number "408" or maybe "40S" is stamped onto the back of the head strap. It also has a sun visor, but I don't know if that came with the mask or is an accessory.

That is an extremely nice mask Dan. You need to share the story of how it came to be in your collection. It appears to be a 20s mask (based on the patch). The patch ads to the value and the visor (probably original)is considered a definate value booster as well. Catalogues will be the way to go on this one.

I picked this one up at the same estate auction that I found the Centennial glove at. I paid $40 for two gloves, the mask and a couple of old baseballs. My biggest regret from that day is that I let a Winchester catchers mitt go too cheaply (I stopped bidding at $40).

Catcher's Mask is c. 1928

Dan- I have a picture of this EXACT mask listed in a 1928 Reach catalog I have. It is a No. 40S "League" mask. $3.00. Descibed as "Strong steel wire. Open Vision model. Has removable sun shade. Leather pads and adjustable head straps."

You did great...but as for the Winchester mitt for around $40..ouch!!

Thanks for the info guys. I knew that I should have gone higher on the Winchester, but I really wanted this mask and the Centennial glove badly and I only had $100 in cash on me in a small town where I had no clue if they even had an atm machine. I only went out to check out the auction on a whim after my brother told me about it that day. I wasn't even expecting to find quality baseball items. They auctioned the Winchester off first and I don't think the guy was going to stop until he won it. Luckily for me the guy didn't seem interested in the remaining baseball items. I talked to the him later and he said he wanted an old catcher's mitt to put in his showcase at his new batting cage facility he was building....I told him he got a good one. If it had been a Winchester bat I would have found an atm machine.

Dan, That guy probably would have kept going on the glove. You always run the risk of Winchester collectors going after it and they have deep pockets. Anyway, you did extremely well.

Sometimes you can just tell at a live auction when someone is bidding to win.http://img447.imageshack.us/img447/3268/reachmask9gv.jpghttp://img447.imageshack.us/img447/3268/reachmask9gv.jpghttp://img447.imageshack.us/img447/3268/reachmask9gv.jpghttp://img447.imageshack.us/img447/3268/reachmask9gv.jpghttp://img447.imageshack.us/img447/3268/reachmask9gv.jpg
