Have a GU Whitey Lockman jersey from 1962, NIC.
It's no 8, NOT the humber he wore during season and in WS, according to WS program.

Any help here appreciated. It's clearly tagged and marked as SF Giants home flannel
Thanks

The roster on Fanbase shows him wearing #3 during 1962.

# 3 is also confirmed by the book "Now Batting, Number ..." This is a great resource that can be had for as little as ONE CENT plus about $ 4.00 postage from Amazon sellers. I give it a strong recommendation. Here is the link http://www.amazon.com/Now-Batting-Number-Superstition-Baseballs/dp/1579125751/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330795742&sr=8-1

I second this. No reference library should be without it.

Will order the book, who did wear no 8 in 62 for SF?
Maybe Whitey switched?

I don't own the book but according to Baseball Almanac no player wore #8 for the Giants between 1960-70. Not sure about coaches though. Hopefully Mike or Bill can help out with those #'s.

According to the Stang/Harkness "Baseball by the Numbers" (another great reference book IMO), #8 for the Giants was worn by coach Cookie Lavagetto from 1964 through 1967.

Street & Smith's 1962 preseason yearbook, suprisingly, adds a whole new bunch of questions. The roster there shows Lockman as #6, although the same number is listed for reserve catcher Ed Bailey. #8 in spring training was issued to Dick Dietz, a catcher who was still several seasons away from making the Show.

My wonder is if the jersey was number changed, either for later MLB/spring training use, or for the minors. If you could post pictures of the inside stitching on the front lettering and the number, that would help.

Thanks all, it is a mystery of sorts.
I will post a pix of lettering, NIC, and the number 8. It does not appear to be altered, the front tag Wilson 44 says 1962, BUT, the NIC is C Lockman (his first name was Carroll) on a cotton material that appears to be glued or sewn .
I don't want to tear it off, so the pix may help figure this out among all of you

Now, how do I put a pix on?
mever did it

When making a post , go to the 5th icon from the bottom right (above the text box) that looks like the sun coming over a mountain...click on it and it will open up a browser window, allowing you to select and upload pics from your files.
