Re: Yastrzemski and McCovey gamers
Speaking of bat markings for Yaz, I have an interesting one. It's a Yaz gamer that matches shipping records perfectly - 1965-68 labeling period, W215, 35", weight (32) in pencil on knob. I think it's also important that W215 is NOT a pro-stock model for Yaz (so it wasn't a bat made for someone else.)
What's interesting, and what I believe ties this bat to 1967 specifically, is that the knob markings aren't the typical "8". Rather, it's a "C" with thick underline. Maybe it stands for "Captain?" "Carl?" I don't know, but I've photo-matched the symbol to a picture of Yaz in the 1967 World Series (only Series he played in while wearing a flannel jersey) as well as his 1968 Topps card, which likely would've been taken in 1967. The Topps card, unfortunately, is cropped about an inch too much to show the whole knob, but what does show is clearly not an "8", and is consistent with the bat and WS picture.
If interested in adding it to your collection, let me know. Please, only serious inquiries (it fits nicely into my collection and I'm not desperate to move it.) Also, I'd like to find some more pics of Yaz with this knob marking.
Thanks,
Mark
