Francoeur brings the bacon -- and pizza, too

OAKLAND -- Jeff Francoeur has a knack for congeniality that reaches beyond the confines of Kauffman Stadium and Kansas City Royals fans. He's winning fans in opponents' ballparks.

Not just any fans either, but a group of 10-15 people who entrench themselves in Section 149 of the right-field bleachers at the Oakland Coliseum. Francoeur inspired "Bacon Tuesday," an annual event for each time the Royals play in Oakland.

Not even a rainy night could dampen the spirits of the fun-loving Francoeur and his hardy band of followers.

"You don't get to build relationships like here in right field every day," Francoeur said before the Royals' series finale in Oakland on Wednesday. "I just enjoy them. It's a lot of fun."

Francoeur plans to wear the special T-shirt presented to him during Tuesday night's second rain delay. He's getting another one signed by the fans in right field which he plans to frame.

The bright green shirt, inscribed "Second annual Bacon Tuesday, sponsored by Jeff Francoeur," hangs in his locker amid a myriad of blue clothing.

"The first time we came out here last year, I started playing around with them," Francoeur said. "We were here twice last year, and toward the end, they started liking me. They asked me if I liked bacon, and I really do love bacon, and told them."

Francoeur, on a Tuesday night, wrapped a $100 bill around a baseball and threw it to the group, suggesting they buy beer and bacon with the money. It's been a match made in bacon heaven ever since.

On Wednesday, Francoeur surprised the group by ordering 20 pizzas that were delivered to them during the game. "Next year, I guess it will be the third annual, and I'm going to get here early and eat bacon with them in the parking lot," Francoeur said. "It's been great, something special."

Wes,
I was at all three games of the series, Frenchy was interacting with them all 3 games. They would cheer for him when he was batting or making plays in the field. Frenchy totally gets it, and seems like a ballplayer who appreciates where he is in life.

I used to go to A's games all the time when I lived there in the early 2000s. The bleachers is always where the die-hards sat. They used bring drums to the games and chant "Tejada!" back in the day whenever Miggy batted.

Great story overall, and I love that Francoeur is getting as big a kick out of it as the fans are. Just awesome for all involved!

Jeff Francoeur sends 20 pizzas to A’s fans

Jeff Francoeur could write a bookabout making friends and influencing people in the bleachers at OaklandAthletics games.

Francoeur, an outfielder for theKansas City Royals, had 20 pizzas delivered Wednesday afternoon to fans sittingin the right-field grandstand at the Oakland Coliseum. He also sent along a signed bat, with a personal message inscribed. That's quite a gift package. Towhat did the Oakland folks owe such generosity? Why in the name of another Jeff— Spicoli — would he buy them pizzas?

The unorthodox acquaintance of avisiting slugger and some East Bay baseball crazies began a season ago when agroup in the bleachers decided to celebrate "Bacon Tuesday" bybringing homemade bacon-flavored eats to the ballpark. With the Royals in town, fans also made Francoeur the target of good-natured heckling (being the rightfielder, he was closest to them). Inevitably, the memes collided. Francoeur gotalong so well with the crowd — he would wave, shout back at them, and laughalong — that after the game he went over for a meet and greet.

Make that a meat and greet.Someone had saved Francoeur a plate of bacon goodies. And, apparently, JeffFrancoeur loves bacon. (He's an American, isn't he?)

The next night, after spotting hisnew BFFs, he threw a signed baseball into the stands with a $100 bill wrappedin a rubber band (maybe you thought I'd say "wrapped in bacon"?) As the Hardball Times reported (http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/blog_article/outfield-assist-of-another-kind/),the note read:

"Beer or Bacon Dog on me. JeffFrancoeur."

All for a plate of bacon and somefriendly conversation. Well, Tuesday night was the second annual Bacon Tuesday,so the food got really elaborate and somebody made T-shirts with Francoeur'sname on them, claiming him to be the event's "sponsor." At somepoint, Francoeur stopped by again and fans gave him treats — perhaps somechocolate bacon, bacon cheesecake or bacon jalapeño poppers — along with ashirt. He was happier than a pig in slop as he showed off the shirt toteammates. Reporter Joel Goldberg of FSN Kansas City (https://twitter.com/#!/goldbergkc/status/190163684759314432/photo/1)has done a lot of legwork on this:

On Wednesday, Francoeur paid backthe fans again. It was pizza delivery time, along with a bat,

"RF Bleachers, keep cookingBacon, Jeff Francoeur"

A classic and classy move, and hedidn't make the mistake that selfish Spicoli made in "Fast Times" bygetting pizza delivered for just himself. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6J8__fWphE0) After all,Frenchy was on "our time," wasn't he?

Check out the look on his face. You know, the world has made a lot of fun of Jeff Francoeur because he'll swing atanything and sometimes we have no idea where his next throw will land. But he'sexactly the kind of ballplayer I'd love to root for. He obviously loves playingthe game, feels rewarded interacting with the fans, and eats his share ofbacon. That's a wonderful combination of qualities, isn't it?

And A's fans collectively don't have the greatest reputation. Usually it's for not showing up at games at theirsketchy ballpark — to the point that ownership wants to pull up stakes and movethem out of town. But if that means fans like these wouldn't go to gamesanymore, it would be a shame.

You know, they never bought beer orbacon dogs with Francoeur's money. Just a case to keep the ball in, with themoney still attached. It's too bad they get painted with a broad brush, becausethese A's fans are witty enough, enthusiastic enough and, doggone it, JeffFrancoeur likes them. And, bacon.
