    1970s Yankees Caps on Ebay

I see that someone is selling a bunch of 1970s era Yankees caps. Most show a great deal of use and are autographed. Anyone know the story behind these caps? Seems like it may have been a bulk purchase from the Yankees back in the day. Many well known players.

I haven't seen all the listings, but the tag on that New Era Guidry points to 1990-92 issuance, not the 1970s. Was Guidry even in uniform for the Yankees at that point in time?

Hi.....they were not a bulk purchase from the Yankees. I have seen 4 of them offered in past auction house catalogs and the Billy Martin cap originates from his former pitching coach Art Fowler. Two of them have circa. 1990-1992 labeling as Dave previously mentioned.

I looked at these a little closer...the Guidry and Willie Randolph could be OK, but are grossly misdated. The tag combo in the sweat band would make them limited to 1988 use by the players mentioned as the users. The Ron Davis and Ken Clay caps, while signed by the two, were most likely worn at a later date by someone else. Clay retired after the 1981 season and Davis was not with the Yankees in 1988, the earliest year the "cap" logo was used on the New Era tag. Unless the unlikley possibility is discovered that these two caps were worn in spring training as instructors or in an Old-Timers Game, the Davis and Clay, while game worn, are misidetified (and therefore autographed by the wrong players).
