    Circle on bats???

Tried searching for an answer but couldn't find one.
I noticed alot of bats have a "circle" towards the top of the handle before the centerbrand.
The circle is usually uncolored such as the normal wood finish of the bat would be.
If my description makes any sense, what's this for??

The ink dot is used to show the slope of grain in maple bats, especially. In short, if the grain is flat through the handle, it will be stronger and there will be fewer two piece breaks.

    Here is a good explanation...

          Thanks guys.
I assumed it had to do with the whole maple bat issue but just wanted to be certain.
