Hi -
Long time stalker, first time poster!
I have an old wool basketball jersey that may be from the New York Americans of the pre-NBA American Basketball League. I cannot find any photos on-line nor has the BB HOF responded to my inquiries. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I will try to post photos below.
Thanks!

From Wikipedia:

New York Americans (basketball)

The New York Americans were an American basketball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basketball) team based in New York, New York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York%2C_New_York) that was a member of the American Basketball League (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Basketball_League_%281925-1955%29).

Hi -
I haven't heard anything in past week. Might anyone know of an individual or association that I could contact to inquire about photos from this long-lost team and league? Thanks again.

Hoping a vintage hoops guy might be able to help.

Someone at the APBR might know something, if you haven't tried that yet. http://members.aol.com/bradleyrd/apbr.html

Yes, I was watching this jersey when it was on eBay months ago. I forgot to bid, and I know you got a good deal. I have searched for photos of the old New York Americans, but no luck. It could be a high school or college, I really don't know. I would do consistant searches on eBay for "New York Americans" (items and descriptions). I often see programs and photos of semi-pro and obscure professional teams. I think this jersey is from the 30s or 40s. Its a nice piece and worth keeping, 'til more history is found. I'll let you know if I come across any leads. Since it is made by a New York Sporting Goods company, it is safe to guess it is from the Northeast.

Throwing this one out there again.
I have had zero luck finding any pics of the New York Americans basketball team of back when. Have tried the website of APBR with no bites. Contacted BBall HOF with no response. The closest I have come was a program that Hunt's was auctioning in a bigger lot but it had no photos either.
Thanks again for any leads.

Try posting the question on the APBR message board. I believe someone will be able to help, even if they're historians & not collectors.

I am also posting here for the first time. Well I have no clue about these jerseys but wonder why BB HOF didn't repond to your queries? Who else can you turn to find the answer? http://www.pppcm.com/138l1291.jpg

This was my first post on the GU Forum and now I'll use my 100th post to throw it back out there. In the past 4 years, I have come across one program of the old NY Americans team but no pics. Any b-ball historians out there?

Bringing this one back up again.
I still haven't been able to find any pics of the New York Americans that played in ABL during WWII. The BBHOF and APBR didn't have anything for me (more accurately, BBHOF never responded). I spoke to two old-time BBall historians from Mass (Mr. Bacon and Mr. Meyer) who were very gracious and helpful but who hadn't seen such a pic themselves.
This may or may not be a New York Americans jersey but in the "could be" column is the team initials on the front, the American flag motiff which would be consistent with the team monicker and the patriotic time period in which the team was formed (1943-44), the approximate age and materials used in construction of the jersey, and the labelling from a NY based sporting goods company of the day.
Please let me know if you have any leads on a photo.
Thanks.

You might want to check with Grey Flannel Auctions. They have a partnership with the BBHOF. They may be willing to help contact someone at the HOF who can help you.

Just and FYI

The New York Americans was the original team name to what is now known as THE BROOKLYN NETS!!!

Here is a very cool article posted about them a few years ago

Still haven't been able to track any photos down of the NY Americans of 1940's ABL.
Here's some team history I've dug up during my research:

Man, oh Man. Check out these beauties. Another NY Americans as well as Brooklyn Indians of ABL.

I'm thinking that "New York" one is probably early Knicks or another team rather than NY Americans.
