Getty Image records indicate the Braves played the Rockies in Colorado on August 18, 1999 wearing these jerseys. (For all you skeptics of Getty Images being a reliable source, the caption is dated and photos of starting pitchers match box score).

Here is a link to the box score from that game.

Despite what the listing, or the Braves say, I do not believe this jersey was game worn. I say that because Javy did not play again after July 24th. Here is what the seller replied, when asked about the jersey.

The good news is that It appears that it closed at the price of an issued jersey.

Braves are one of the tougher TATC jersey styles out there. Was he on the roster for the game?

Since this style was worn for one game only, if Javy was on the roster and sat on the bench or in the bullpen, I still would consider it game worn.....What would you say if you had Bobby Cox's, Greg Maddux's or Leo Mazzone's uniform top from that game??...Even though they saw no game action, they would be considered game worn as well.

I would definately consider it worn if he was indeed on the bench and dressed in the uniform. However, if this was the case, I would pay considerably less than a gamer with wear, but more than a team issued jersey. For anyone that says, "but this jersey was only worn once", I understand that. But, I would imagine a Javy jersey from that era could show some decent signs of wear, even if only for one night. Afterall, he would have been behind the plate, so you have to deal with piling from chest protector, and he plays fairly tough so there would be a good chance of dirt, scraped buttons, or various other signs of wear.

I don't know that I could consider it "game worn" unless he was in the lineup in some fashion. My belief, when it comes to spending hard earned cash, is it becomes a sellers responsibility to prove it when all facts state the contrary. In this case, Good luck!!!

People can say "Well the team issued a LOA, or they were selling it as game worn, or I won it at a team sponsored charity." Well that is fine, but teams make mistakes. Shoot, I bid on a game worn jersey at my local minor league team, this season. These were special jerseys that were worn for one game only. After I won, my wife brought to my attention that two guys were wearing #18 that night!!! I thought that was odd, and of course the guy's jersey I wanted was #18. As luck would have it, THE TEAM gave me the other #18 jersey, and insisted that I was wrong. When I finally explained it to the person in charge of the auction, they dug through the jerseys and found that I was correct, and gave me the correct one. Thank goodness my wife noticed that. The other player was a catcher so it was easy to see the mixed up one when you knew to look out for it (much more wear). I guess it simply shows that some team officials do not put the necessary time, that we as collectors would like to see, on ensuring their items are true gamers. It also shows how a simple thing can throw off a letter of authenticity, and mislead far past the original purchase date. Had my wife not pointed those numbers out, I would have a jersey that I thought belonged to a #1 draft pick, which showed tons of wear. Actually I would have had the filthy jersey of a back up Low A minor league catcher. BIG DIFFERENCE!!!! Especially when I go to sell it, and someone else gets something they think is one thing but is actually another.

Back to the jersey at hand. Here is a guy (Lopez) that suffers a season ending injury several weeks before this game. He doesn't even make a post season appearance. For the teams I follow, I find it very rare that a player, injured to that degree, travels with the team - much less dresses for the game. Usually they are having surgery followed by grueling training and rehab. That is why I believe the burden of proof is on the seller. If someone comes up with a lineup card that shows him available for the game, or a photo of him dressed on the bench, I would say that jersey is no longer a $170 jersey but considerably more.

Ironmanfan, Here is a Javy jersey that appears to meet your criteria. I found photos for a game against the Phillies (7/26/02) where this style jersey was worn. Javy did not play in that game, but had pinch hit the day before and played two days later. (According to boxscores).

However, this listing indicates the jersey listed was worn August 3, 2002. Again, boxscores indicate Javy did not play in the game. He didn't play between July 31st and August 16th. Since this apparent injury was not a season ending one, I would think that perhaps he did suit up on the bench.
