March 2013 Pickups

Calendar says March 1, so here are a couple of very recent additions to my collection:

First is a nice 1977 home alternate of Orioles pitcher, Scott McGregor. 1977 was the last year that McGregor wore #39 prior to switching to his more familiar #16 (which he wore in honor of his childhood hero, Whitey Ford):



The other are two MLB Authenticated baseballs from 2001, which date from Cal Ripken Jr.'s last career games in both Tampa & Kansas City. I was able to have Cal sign both with neat inscriptions:

Got this signed Bonds 2001 SAM GU 10 gamer today. Slight crack on handle and deep seam impressions on barrel.

I been pretty busy since my move and haven't had much time to post pick ups. There's been a few items I've found in the past few months, but nothing compares to this, my holy grail item, and the only one I've ever seen offered in 30 years of collecting....

The last leather model helmet (Wilson Airlite) worn by the Minnesota Gophers before the transition to a soley plastic shell helmet. It was worn by Carl Ekberg, who played on both of Minnesota's National Championship teams in 1940 and 1941. I've been able to style match it, but an exact photomatch, which I'm not that into, will be difficult. No matter, I'm 110% sure of the provenance.

For a managers jersey, this is one of the most heavily used pieces that I have. It is set tagged 2011, and was used through the end of the 2012 season. I can't wait to put this one on the wall with the other great leaders of the game.

Finally picked up a Billy Butler with the newer Phoenix "burning/flaming P" logo, aka the Gonorrhea logo. All I have left to get my player collection up to date is a black Mizuno.
