I am looking for some help dating a Tigers BP jersey. I do know this jersey style was worn between 85 and 91 by the Detroit Tigers. The pre 88 examples appear to have red tags, so this would indicate 89-91. However, all the 89-91 ones that I have seen, have the flag tag with year with the white rawlings tag.
In the lot of these jerseys that I am researching (around 75 of them), there are 9 of them that are tagged like this, and 7 of the 9 are size 44. In regards to the players number, he was with the team through all of those years, so that is of no help.

The Rawlings tag you show (with smaller size numbers and only three lines of laundering instructions) is a 1990-91 tag, with very rare appearances in 1989. For all intents and purposes, it's 1990-91.

Dave - what are your thoughts on the missing flag tag?

In my sample of 75 jerseys, I do have many with a 1990 flag tag, but not one with a 1991 flag tag. Considering that 1991 was the last year this style jersey was worn, I guess it is possible that they did not purchase any new jerseys since they got at least 2 years out of a jersey (in the majors).

Thanks,

Wes

Rawlings wasn't always consistent with use/non-use of flag tags over the years, particularly during their 5 years with the official uniform contract (1987-91). I can't say for sure if your hypothesis is accurate, but it is certainly possible. It's also possible that the 1991 orders just didn't carry flag tags.
