Why would Mears use a picture of Rice after a touch down from the September 29th game against the Falcons? The picture collage by Mears makes it look like it's some kind of photo match or something.

It is interesting that MEARS would use an image from a game in which Rice is wearing a jersey with a completely different style of front, rear and shoulder numbers. The 49ers shifted from the thicker style numbers to the thinner style numbers on the November 17th game vs the Ravens, when the shirt being auctioned was noted to have been worn.

I could only find a handful of images of Rice from the Ravens game and I have not found a photo match yet. I plan to watch a DVD of the game prior to bidding. Finding a match via DVD should not be that difficult. I wonder why MEARS did not do this.

Always buying 49er game worn jerseys including ALL 1994 49er gamers.

Any Kobe-type ownership question here?

Here is a photo taken from the November game against the Ravens. It appears the jersey he wore has more material on the nameplate than the one offered in Mears. The photo is not high def but clearly you can see what I mean as i circled it in black.

I guess he could have worn more than one jersey in the game but that would be impossible o prove I think.

I have messaged Mears with my concern.

Troy has responded. He thinks they are the same jersey. He is gonna get back to me to prove that it is the same jersey. Will post an update.

I received an email from Troy with images from the game and the jersey.
He sent them in a word document however as opposed to a jpeg
when I get them in a jpeg I will post them.

Paul:

While I don't question the jersey itself, I do have to make mention that MEARS' lack of consistency and/or accuracy on photo and style matches has been less than sterling over the years. When I worked there, one authenticator, not me and no longer employed, would routinely use shots of other players and/or shots of the same player in a different style jersey in order to create a style match.

What authenticator no longer works there but did this practice? This sounds like a very vague statement that must be attributed to someone to be posted or you make light of every former MEARS authenticator who previously worked for the company.

I would love to see some different photo evidence as well besides getty images. As it does state in the auction
is verified via an accompanying photo of Rice during the game.

I have heard back from troy and he provided me this image. I appreciate Troy getting back to me and doing his best to put my concerns to rest. I still do not think this is the jersey worn by Rice November 17th 1996 against the Ravens. The space between the top of the name and top of the nameplate does not match up in my opinion.

This will be my last post on this topic as my point and concerns have been made.

Although the post I made about MEARS has been deleted, for those who saw it, I confess that it was probably a poor idea to bring up deficiencies from my time working for MEARS, since that ended years ago. To Troy and his staff, I offer my regrets for commenting on the past and not the present.
