    Why Do Collectors Store Items??????

    Hi,

I have spoke to a few collectors recently and a lot over the last year or so where their collection is in storage. Can folks enlighten me on why this happens? To me its selfish and disrespectful to other collectors. For instance, if I had a tubs full Kurt Suzuki items or Austin Jackson items that's disrespectful to both the big player collectors that we have on the GUU that will actually display and cherish them instead of collect dust and mouse feces in a storage unit. There is a very small window in rarity for collecting these days so to put items in storage to think they will pull Babe Ruth prices in 75 years is flat out ignorant.

I understand that sometimes you are not able to display everything but atleast if you need to put items in storage in your basement or attic those should atleast get the option to be sold to someone that will appreciate them. I talked to a collector the other day about an item his words "I'm not interested in selling, plus its in a storage unit and will take a few days for me to get." They have shows called hoarders for a reason, if you are having hoarder issues please let me know I can help take care of that. The thing is as well when most collectors pass away like one of my buddies grandpas, the stuff still sits in a storage unit, forgotten about, and most likely ruined. So for the collectors that have storage units full of items that other collectors will display and cherish can you please explain to me why you are not selling and why you put your items in storage. Collectors like that remind me of the friend who when a couple friends buy a motorcycle so does he and lets it sit in the garage. Opinions will be greatly appreciated so I can understand.

Do you live an a apartment or house?

    Do you have a wife?

    Any kids?

Sorry, but I disagree. Some of us can't help it, doesn't mean we are disrespectful.

If I own something and want to put it in storage it's not disrespectful to anyone by doing so. It's my stuff. I can do whatever I want with it. I'm sorry but I find your post kind of silly.

There are no rules in this hobby on what I am supposed to do with my stuff so not sure what you want the outcome of your post to be.

      Plus it's America dude.

Agreed. To say it is disrespectful is asinine.

Lol let the lashings begin HAHA!! To me its disrespectful someone that dedicates their entire collection to one player and if you don't appreciate that item enough to display it then why have it period?? I spent a year in Iraq and that's the only time my items were stored and I put them at my moms house in a spare room while I was gone. I understand that all items cant be "displayed" per say but to have a storage unit is asinine. That's like putting a motorcycle in storage in the summer, why have it. I didn't say there was any rules to collecting or whatever you are assuming I am simply asking a question. If you don't appreciate an item enough to have it in your house why have it is my question, not saying that you cant or anything the lynch mob is assuming.

Let's say you 3 in the lynch mob are strictly niners collectors and I had a couple Montana SB jerseys that sit in a storage unit and collect dust and all 3 of you have offered me fair offers and I say no Ill leave them in the storage unit you don't find that disrespectful. I understand that its "America dude" but still to me I would feel like I was disrespecting you guys because you would actually enjoy , cherish, and display the item and to me its a piece of fabric because I could care less about the 49ers. Guess opinions differ, but I would feel that I was being disrespectful.

As was stated my items are just that..... my items. This is not socialist collecting last time I checked. I have and will never feel I owe another collector one of my items in storage because he might be head over heels for that player and i cannot display it at this time.

I am not really sure why you care about other peoples collections and what they do with their items that they own.

I actually have a Cubs collector that's wanted a jersey that I have a for a few months and I have two of the player, no player collection I just wanted one but another came with a bulk buy so I have two and like the player but feel bad for not selling the jersey because I know he would enjoy the jersey as much as I would and I don't need 2.

This is the part that I take the most umbrage with. I am not collecting with the hope that someday I will be able to retire early and live like a king. I collect because I love baseball. It's as simple as that. The sport is in my blood and has been since a very young age. Outside of my family and friends nothing brings me more enjoyment than collecting game used baseball memorabilia.

I have nearly all of my game used collection in some form of storage (closet, bins etc). Why? Well I don't have the space to display it at the moment. If the question why do I still buy stuff if I don't have the room comes to mind please read my first paragraph again. This is a hobby and while some make a career out of it the majority of us here are just your average guy who has a passion for sports memorabilia.

Its called courtesy, caring, and generosity, 3 things that seems to be going down the drain in the USA. Those 3 reasons are why I care about other collectors and collection, the reason why there was a memory post for Mulligans its called friendships and bonding. Why have GUU if no one cares about others collections?

I thought my original response was respectful with some pretty legitimate questions.

Again, if you have a small place, a wife, some kids, even a pet, or not financially stable, then sometimes it makes it really hard to display your items the way you would like. I don't think those reasons make you disrespectful to the hobby or other collectors at all.. It's part of life, and if someone doesn't like that then, well, I'm sorry.

I think we would all agree that those of us that store a lot of our collections wish we could display them.

I only buy what I can display. Matter of fact I was told that I was running out of room to display large items. So now I am down to small items (baseballs, mini helmets, or hockey pucks). If I am good to spend good money I want to be able to see what I bought and have them be talking points for guests when they come over.

Plus it's kinda fun rummaging thru my piles of game used laundry and finding a couple really cool jerseys u forgot u had. It really is like Christmas. And when do we adults get to experience that anymore....getting a present that you really really wanted and will enjoy?
                              Ha. Sorta kidding
