AFCA game used Southern Miss football question

Howdy all and Happy New Year! I received this 2013 Southern Miss vs FIU game used football in December from the AFCA online auction and have a question about its use in a game. It has the letter "K" written on two sides of the ball and hand-written initials, which I assume are referee markings. Just wanted to ask if the ball was kicked to Southern Miss or kicked from Southern Miss to the return team, FIU? I assume it was kicked by USM, but I seem to remember seeing pics of an USM player running a kick back with a USM logo ball. Many thanks for anyone who answers!

Schools use their own ball to kick. That is why Alabama wanted the ball back from Auburn after Auburn ran the missed FG back for a TD to win the Iron Bowl

Thanks for the explanation. That's a great example. I kinda thought that, but wasn't sure. Thanks again!
